4:157–4:159 vaguely describes how Esa (as) was never even put on any cross….however, allah never revealed the exact method of escape. Todd Lawson’s book, “christ and the Crucifixtion gives many early references which confirm that Muslims always believed that Esa (as) was never even on the cross. Further, all of the mujadids of the past endorsed the idea that Esa (as) was never “hung” on any cross. Sir Syed was the first Muslim who ever began to assert that Esa (as) was on the cross and in the state of swoon….obviously, MGA and Noorudin copied their mentor, i.e. Sir Syed and began selling the same idea.

Just like all arabic words, the meanings change easily based on context. Salaboo can mean “crucify” or basically “hung”. In 4:157, Allah told Muslims that Esa (As) was never hung, so he was never crucified. All the Mujadids and scholars have explained it using the “substitution-theory”.

This post is intellectually dishonest; Todd Lawson very clearly points out that the source of the substitution theory was a Christian bishop, generally considered the last of the early church fathers. You completely ignore his discussion of the Muslims throughout history who except the crucifixion as historical fact ( he of course also discusses the Ahmadi position and its possible origin.) PS: I’m definitely not an Ahmadi.

It’s been three years since I’ve read the book, so don’t have it in front of me… The whole point of the book as stated in the introduction and conclusion is that Muslims have never been of one mind as to what happened to Jesus at the time the historical event of the crucifixion happened. The material you’ve referenced in later posts is there; as is the Sufi exegesis of people like Al-Ghazali, and the opinion of the Ismaili’s, the epistles of the Brethren of Purity (whose sectarian affiliation is contested) among others. I personally believe Jesus was physically crucified, and that his spirit ascended to heaven; Lawson discusses this opinion in his book. You are doing exactly what evangelical Christian missionaries, Ahmadi’s, and dawah men do: taking something with a rich history and context and trying to make it seem simple and uncontested.

I appreciate the feedback. And yes, Lawson does show how Muslims have differed in terms of the details. However, he proves that from the earliest recorded history of Islam, the substitution theory was the main explanation of the escape of Esa (As). Lawson quotes NO Tafsir which would indicate that Esa (as) died or escaped to India. And thats his chapter from the earliest period of Islam.
