Intro
When Mufti Muhammad Sadiq arrived in the USA (Philadelphia) he was held at the immigration authorities sent a cable to India to confirm his identity. They also seem to have had issues with his religious beliefs in terms of polygamy. Mufti Muhammad Sadiq told the U.S. government that he was not a polygamist and confessed to having a wife and kids in India (see the Evening Public Ledger, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Feb 20, 1920). The Immigration Act of 1870 understood polygamy as a commandment of Islam, thus not allowing Muslims into America. Mufti Sadiq, by appealing against the deportation orders of the immigration authorities and by presenting his case before the American federal Government. In fact, in the July-1921 edition of the Moslem Sunrise, Mufti Muhammad Sadiq wrote an entire article against Polygamy. He even said that if a Muslim practices polygamy in the USA he is committing a sin against his own religion (islam). He goes on to say Polygamy is a permission in Islam, not a commandment.

However, in Dec of 1922, he secretly and illegally married Edith V. Hoffman in what seems to be an islamic only Nikkah and not registered with the state of illinois or the City of Chicago. Edith V. Hoffman was a married woman.

In Feb of 1923, Mufti Muhammad Sadiq travelled to Buffalo and Edith V. Hoffman was with him, he gave a speech on Polygamy therein which was covered by the Buffalo Evening Times of Tuesday, Feb-13-1923 (See the scan in the below). Edith V. Hoffman was his secretary. Mufti Muhammad Sadiq lies about the islamic ideals on taking another wife. He says that a Muslim can take a new wife any time he likes. He forgets that the Quran strictly told a Muslim man that if he cannot do justice, he shouldn’t take a second or 3rd wife.

A baby girl (Noor Sadiq) was born to Mufti Sadiq and Hoffman in Aug of 1923 and in Philadelphia. The police were on to him in late Aug-1923, wherein he fled from Philadelphia and immediately left the country via Massachussets.

Evening Public Ledger, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Feb 20, 1920 say “I am not a polygamist myself, having only one wife, who is in India”.
