Intro
In 2014, Dr. Steven Weinberg told students the ICTP how him and Dr. Abdus Salam had met. He explained how he was in California at the time and a Physics Professor UC Berkeley in 1960. He said he heard a knock at his door, it was Dr. Abdus Salam.

Pre-1960, Dr. Steven Weinberg explains that he knew about Dr. Abdus Salam through his academic papers and as a graduate student, Weinberg had read Salam’s work on renormalization theory. Weinberg seems to have written about how Salam’s theory on renormalization could be used to all infinities cancelling to all orders of Perturbation theory.

In 1961, Weinberg was hosted by Dr. Abdus Salam at Imperial College for one year as an “Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow”. It’s unclear where Weinberg and his wife lived in 1961-1962. Salam, Weinberg and Goldstone wrote a paper together which was published in the “Phys. Rev. 127, 965 – Published 1 August 1962. They argued that there was no hope to the idea of broken symmetry. However, a few years later, 3 different groups of physicist discovered an exception to this rule, the Higgs mechanism, which was later incorporated into “The Unified Theory of Weak and Electromagnetic Forces”. Weinberg also revealed that he never heard anything about the ICTP while in London.

ABSTRACT

Some proofs are presented of Goldstone’s conjecture, that if there is continuous symmetry transformation under which the Lagrangian is invariant, then either the vacuum state is also invariant under the transformation, or there must exist spinless particles of zero mass.
