Rabwah Times is reporting that in a joint session of the National Assembly of Pakistan, a significant situation arose when Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq sought two basic clarifications from Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar:

1. What instructions did the Supreme Court give regarding the establishment of this commission?

2. And what will be the legal status of the Qadiani Jamaat after the bill?

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar responded by saying that the government would not be part of any initiative that would strengthen ‘Qadianism’. He said that Clause 35 of the bill has been completely deleted because various parties had raised objections to it.

The Law Minister clarified that:

According to Pakistani law, Qadianis are not considered Muslims. The commission will neither have the power to impose punishment nor will it be able to take suo motu notice. The bill aims only to create an institutional framework related to minority rights, it does not include any religious amendments. Questions on the frequent use of religious references in the Assembly.

Political observers say that Pakistan’s constitution separates the state from religion, but the frequent mention of religious identities in the assembly — especially when discussing a specific religious group by name — indicates that religious issues are being made part of the political debate. Some quarters say that raising such topics risks inflaming public sentiment and increasing social divisions.

Legal experts say that the main objective of the bill is to protect the rights of minorities and fulfill constitutional obligations, but the debate in this regard has once again raised questions about religious sensitivities in the country.
