Intro
In the below I have posted 7 newspaper reports from 1933 which give written evidence of Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) as a prophet and the black man as God. Underneath that are roughly 259 newspaper reports that mention the keywords of Gulam Bogans and Elijah Mohammed.

In Jan-1933, just a month after Wallace Farad was ordered to leave Detroit and Ugan Ali was released from prison (Ugan promised to disband the cult)(This was in Dec-1932). In Jan-1933, Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) began writing letters (most likely written by Burnsteen Mohammed, female, aged 16-17) to “The Afro American” newspaper. In his first letter, he simply wrote about how Christianity had made Black people ignorant. He also seems to be promoting “Out of Africa” theory (which is totally bogus). At this point in time, he was still calling him by the name that Wallace Farad had assigned to him, which was Elijah Karriem. In the letter, he alleges that Muhammad (Saw) was a full-blooded black man as well as Jesus (as). Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that Moses (as), Alexander the Great and Napolean were mixed with black men’s blood. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) that Muhammad (Saw) and his followers were not conquered by white men and they never enslaved any black men. He signed off the letter as 3059 Yeman St, Detroit, Elijah Karriem.

By April-1933, Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) was announcing himself as a Prophet, here to save Black people. He gave many silly statements, like white people have only been in existence for roughly 6000 years. In a letter from Apr-15, Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that the black man is God (naozobillah) and continues to allege that the black man is the father, the first, and the last of all mankind.

In May of 1933, Wallace Farad was back in town and was found by police at the Traymore Hotel. It is unclear whether het met up with Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) and his new fangled cult.

By June of 1933, another letter appears of general nature.

By July of 1933, Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleged that Fard (aka Wallace Farad) told him about devils being cast out of heaven 6000 years ago, and heaven is the Holy City of Mecca. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) also presented the theory of Yakub.

The name Elijah Karriem was never mentioned again in any newspaper.

In April of 1934, a new Voodoo cult had its headquarters at 3801 Hastings St. Detroit and was raided. As part of the raid, a man named Elijah Mohammed and 18 other Negroes (mostly teachers) were arrested for contributing to the truancy of minors via their “University of Islam” school (Via the Detroit Free Press1934Apr19Page 1). On April 25.–Circuit Judge Arthus E. Gordon today dismissed charges of contributing to the delinquency of children against 18 instructors in a Negro “University of Islam,” but convicted “Elijah Mohammed,” who said he was a minister at the school. “Mohammed” was admitted to probation (See the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Wed, Apr 25, 1934 ·Page 2).

In the Detroit Free Press of Apr-29-1934, W.D. Fard is mentioned as the prophet/savior of this voodooo cult of negroes and Elijah Muhammad is listed as the pastor. It is mentioned how the school of Elijah Muhammad, Muhammad University of Islam and temple at 3335 State St, Detroit, MI (See the Detroit Free Press of Apr-19-1934). He is referred to as Prophet Fard also.

In Aug-1934, Elijah Muhammad published the 3rd issue of the “Final Call to Islam” newspaper. Interestingly, Elijah Muhammad quoted the Quran, Chapter 46, verses 31-32, and inferred that W.D. Fard should be accepted. W.D. Fard was written as Prophet Fard Mohammed.

About a year later, in March-1935, the Chicago Tribune reported on page-1 how in Chicago, 43 members of the “Allah Temple of Islam” on 3743 South State St. were arrested for inciting a riot and possible murder. Among the 43 prisoners was a man named King Shah, 38 years old and living at 3242 South State St. and Allah Shah, 18 years old and living at 2556 Warren boulevard, both were shot in the riot. Their Moorish names puzzled the police until King Shah disclosed that the prophet of their order, W.D. Farad, or Fard Mohammad, or Elijah Mohammed, had christened them thus last spring. A police search for Prophet Fard was started but he could not be found last night. Fard was described as one “born in the holt city of Mecca in 1877”, who came to America on July 4, 1930. King Shah also seems to be claiming to be a minor-prophet. It seems that Elijah Mohammed is missing.

In 1936 and 1937, there is no mention of any Elijah Karriem aka Elijah Poole aka Elijah Mohammed.

In 1938, via Beynon, it is told to the world how Elijah Mohammed was previously named as Elijah Karriem.

In 1939-1941, there is no mention of any Elijah Karriem aka Elijah Poole aka Elijah Mohammed.

On May-8-1942, Gulan Bogan (aka Elijah Muhammad) was arrested for Draft evasion in the Washington D.C. area. (See the Evening Star Newspaper of Sat, May 09, 1942 ·Page 1)(See also, “The Washington Star” of May-8-1942, via Evanzz). His name is written Culam Bogans (aka Gulan Bogans) of Georgia and Mohammed of U Street and Elijah Mohammed. He says Moslems shouldn’t be involved in any war. He alleges to have met God in a vision in 1931. He also calls himself as Mohammed Rassoull. He is charged with aiding others to avoid the draft and etc. Roughly 2 months later, on Jul-24-1942, his wife Mrs. Clara Mohammed showed up to the jail with $5000 for bail and Gulan Bogan (aka Elijah Muhammad) was a free man (See The Washington Daily News of Fri, Jul 24, 1942 ·Page 9)(Times Herald of Fri, Jul 24, 1942 ·Page 25). On Sep-5, via “The Daily Tribune of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin”, (of Page 7), the Chicago police and FBI were looking for Gulam Bogan aka Mohammed Rassoul (See full ref in the below). Elijah Poole (who was previously called named as Elijah Muhammad aka Gulam Bogan) was arrested again on Sep-21-1942 for Draft evasion (See the Chicago Tribune of Tue, Sep 22, 1942 Page 9)(Fanusie spelled it as Ghulam Bogans and via FBI reports, see her dissertation, pages 23-24). Elijah Muhammad was also called “Elijah-Muck-Muhd” and as “The Prophet”. Elijah Muhammad was found on 9-21-1942 at 6026 Vernon Ave, Chicago (this is roughly 3 miles from the Ahmadiyya USA headquarter at 4448 S. Wabash Ave) and under his mother’s bed and wrapped up in a carpet. The “temple” was located at 104 East 51st St. His assistant named Lenzie Karie was also arrested and was working as a “minister”, he lives at 6117 Rhodes Avenue. Bond was announced at 10,000 dollars. Leaders of 2 other “black” groups were also arrested. At the time (1942), Elijah Muhammad’s organization was called “The Temple of Islam”.

He is also briefly mentioned in the newspapers of 1943 and 1944 in connection with Satohashi Takahashi.

Long summary

In the Afro-American Newspaper of Jan-28, 1933, Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) wrote a letter to the editor wherein he alleged that Christianity had made black people ignorant. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) also mentions a statement by Dr. Woodson in the same newspaper from last week about black people entering America via Europe. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) disagrees and says that black people knew about Americans thousands of years before the Indians (Native American’s) even showed up. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that Indians were exiled from India 16,000 years ago and walked over the Bering Strait via Siberia, and then Alaska and then via Canada. These are the people that Columbus found in the America’s and these are the black man’s brothers. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that Colombus was half-black and got his knowledge from the Black man of the East. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that even before the voyage of Columbus, he knew the Earth was round like a ball. He also alleges that only the white man didn’t know that the Earth was round (black people always knew). He alleges that black people know about every square inch of this Earth and has been knowing it for 1000’s of years, even before European’s existed.

Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that the white man’s history only goes back 6000 years. He then quotes a statement by Dr. Woodson and alleges that Muhammad (Saw) was a full blooded black man as well as Jesus (as). Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that he can prove to anyone that Muslims outnumber Christians in the world, 11 to 1.

In the “The Afro-American” newspaper of Sat, Feb 11, 1933 ·Page 6, A Christian man named Robt. Franklin Stansbury responded to Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) previous letter from January.

In the “The Afro-American” newspaper of Sat, Apr 01, 1933 ·Page 8, Elijah Karriem’s letter came with what seems to be announcing of his prophethood: “Preachers Don’t Know the Bible and Must Hear the Prophet in Detroit”.

Elijah also wrote:

—No black man in North America should be allowed to preach unless he can read and understand the KORAN, the book from which the American Bible came. Moses got it from the KORAN, the Jews from Moses, the Greeks from the Jews, the Englishmen from the Greeks, and the American from the Englishmen.

“”As I have said, and always will, that our preachers who preach the white man’s religion, do not understand the Bible in which they preach. The poor believers should stop listening at these preachers until they can prove what they are preaching. I speak not to the white preachers, because Christianity is their religion, and not the black man’s.””

–“””These strangers are white people, whose age is 6019 years, whose time expired in 1914. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that the power of the black-man is growing. He alleges to be doing the greatest work for American black people. He alleges that we are not the foot mat of the world, instead the cream.””

Wallace Farad was caught and arrested at the Traymore Hotel on May 25-26, 1933. However, it is unclear if he met with Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed).

In July of 1933 (See “The Afro-American” Sat, Jul 01, 1933 ·Page 10), he mentioned Fard, he also said:

“‘For 6000 thousand years, ever since the devils were cast out of the Garden of Eden, or Paradise, in which the prophet, Fard, has said and confirms that this place mentioned in the Bible is no other place than the Holy City of Mecca, Arabia.”

”’Yacob was a black man, himself, and it has taken him 600 years to graft white out of the black man, thus this man (white man) was made weaker, and he was given the name, Devil, because he is wicked. Anything grafted from the original is weaker (or wicked).”’

He doesn’t seem to appear in American newspapers after July-1933.

On Jan-28, 1933, the Afro American newspaper published a review by Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) of a statement by W. E. B. Du Bois which appeared in the same newspaper in Dec-1932. The statement was about how W. E. B. Du Bois about not going to church, since they repeated the same old “nothing” every Sunday. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleged that Christianity has made millions of black people in North America ignorant.

Preachers Don’t Know the Bible and Must Hear the Prophet in Detroit
To the Editor of the AFRO:

This is to let the people know of the presence of the prophet in Detroit. It is predicted of old by the prophet of the Bible, that in this present world crisis, this man would come searching for the lost brothers. Many of the people are unaware of his presence, and are still looking for him. Let them hear of his works in Detroit, and then read and understand the Bible.

I will prove to any man in the world by the Bible and by the work this man is doing in Detroit. That he is the one, the last and only friend of the poor lost ignorant brother. Do you know that the American Bible is written in symbolic language and the preachers of my people never have been able to understand it? Though they all profess to know, they do not. To understand it, the preachers should seek this man.

No black man in North America should be allowed to preach unless he can read and understand the KORAN, the book from which the American Bible came. Moses got it from the KORAN, the Jews from Moses, the Greeks from the Jews, the Englishmen from the Greeks, and the American from the Englishmen.

Thus the translation was fixed that the poor people would not be able to understand until he comes and in him all the hidden mystery is made clear.

“Prophet” of Detroit says black man is Cream of World, not Foot mat

In another letter to the editor. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) calls himself as a “Prophet” for black people. He is in American to deliver black people, he is their only friend, he is seeking his lost brothers who have fallen among strangers. These strangers are white people, whose age is 6019 years, whose time expired in 1914. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that the power of the black-man is growing. He alleges to be doing the greatest work for American black people. He alleges that we are not the foot mat of the world, instead the cream. Elijah Karriem (aka Elijah Mohammed) alleges that the black man is the father, the first, and the last of all mankind. There is no GOD but him, on earth and in the space above. He proves this by the works of the black man’s wisdom.

In the same newspaper, there is another response by a Christian man named Robt. Franklin Stansbury, who lives at 1731 Gilmor Street, Baltimore, Md. It seems to be almost identical to the previous response.

Whose Christianity?
To the Editor of the AFRO:

“”As I have said, and always will, that our preachers who preach the white man’s religion, do not understand the Bible in which they preach. The poor believers should stop listening at these preachers until they can prove what they are preaching. I speak not to the white preachers, because Christianity is their religion, and not the black man’s.

What was the Gospel of Jesus? Was not it Freedom, Justice and Equality? Do the modern black preachers preach this kind of doctrine? I should say they do not. Preachers are implicated in politics, directly or indirectly, and sell the people to the devils (the white men) at every election.

Battle of Armageddon
To the Editor of the AFRO

“”The day has come and the hour is at hand that the poor black man of North America, had better hear, and when he has heard, he had better run, and make haste and join hands with his brother and there cleave together as never before. If we be brothers, then, why should not we agree? Are not we the same flesh and blood? Should a man hate that which is his own? But hate, and not having love for our own is our greatest trouble, and will cost us our lives in the great battle of Armageddon.

“‘For 6000 thousand years, ever since the devils were cast out of the Garden of Eden, or Paradise, in which the prophet, Fard, has said and confirms that this place mentioned in the Bible is no other place than the Holy City of Mecca, Arabia.

The devil is none other than the Caucasian, and today the white man is forbidden with 50 square miles of the Holy City of Mecca, although the devil was not made in the Holy City. His father, Yacob, was born 20 miles from this city in the year of 8,400 and began grafting the devil (or white man) from the black man on the Island of Polan or the Patmos of the Bible.

Yacob was a black man, himself, and it has taken him 600 years to graft white out of the black man, thus this man (white man) was made weaker, and he was given the name, Devil, because he is wicked. Anything grafted from the original is weaker (or wicked).

Since the driving out of the devil, he has made every effort possible to destroy the black man and his works. The preachers tell their converts that the devil will burn them in fire after death if they don’t believe in Christianity. But this is wrong. No one is burnt after death! The devil burns them in the Southern States alive.”””

Detroit, Mich., April 25.–Circuit Judge Arthus E. Gordon today dismissed charges of contributing to the delinquency of children against 18 instructors in a Negro “University of Islam,” but convicted “Elijah Mohammed,” who said he was a minister at the school. “Mohammed” was admitted to probation.

When the defendants were arraigned last week, 500 followers of the cult made a demonstration in front of police headquarters, causing injuries to 20 policemen and an equal number of Negroes””.

Sally Ali alleged that the prophet and savior is a man named is G.D. Farrand (aka Wallace Farad). Sally Ali alleged that Farrand had been in Detroit in 1934, however, no evidence exists (See the Detroit Free Press of Thu, Apr 26, 1934 ·Page 1 and 2).

43 members of the “Allah Temple of Islam” on 3743 South State St. were arrested for inciting a riot and possible murder. Among the 43 prisoners was also a man named King Shah, 38 years old and living at 3242 South State St. and Allah Shah, 18 years old and living at 2556 Warren boulevard, both were wounded in the riot. Their Moorish names puzzled the police until King Shah disclosed that the prophet of their order, W.D. Fard, or Fard Mohammad, or Elijah Mohammed, had christened them thus last spring. A police search for Prophet Fard was started but he could not be found last night. Fard was described as one “born in the holt city of Mecca in 1877″, who came to America on July 4, 1930. King Shah also seems to be claiming to be a minor-prophet. It seems that Elijah Mohammed is missing.

Captain Joseph Palcynski (73 years old, a veteran of nearly 50 years on the police force) via heart attack was the possible murder charge. The baillif named Philip Brankin was shot in the chest was awaiting a life-saving blood transfusion. a negro was shot, 38 people, 12 policemen, 6 bailiffs and 20 negros were cut or bruised. This happened in the Woman’s court, presided over by Municipal Judge Edward S. Scheffler. It was like a fanatical frenzy. The cultists were wearing their red, crescent marked fezzes askew, stormed through the court room with wild shouts.

After questioning many witnesses, the newspaper concluded that Mrs. Rosetta Hassan, who lives at 3342 South State street. On Friday, while riding a street car with her husband, Zach Hassan and their 9-year old son, Zack Jr., Mrs. Hassan became embroiled in a quarrel with Mrs. Athenasia Christopolous, who lives at 1448 Monroe Street, whose young son also accompanied her. Mrs. Christopolous alleges that that her glasses were broken in the quarrel and sought a warrant vs. Mrs. Hassan.

In the courtroom, all the negro cultist jumped into action at precisely when the order was given. A riot seems to have ensued. Chairs went flying! Captain Joseph Palcynski (73 years old, a veteran of nearly 50 years on the police force) ran towards all the trouble. King Shah pushed Palcynski to the floor, some reports alleged that many Negro’s jumped on him. He was dead a few seconds later. The bailiff, Philip Brankin dashed into the fight and seems to have shot Allah Shah (left foot) and King Shah (right shoulder). However, it was unclear as to who fired the weapons. No weapons were found! Several witnesses reported seeing bailiffs and police men with drawn revolvers. 30 of the 40 prisoners are also facing contempt of court accusations. They all allege to be from the ‘Allah Temple of Islam”, which propounds the theory that all blacks are Moors and not Negroes. The original prophet was Noble Drew Ali. The Chicago Temple, seems to be an offshoot of Drew’s original group.

“””A quarrel between 2 women on a street car 10 days ago developed yesterday into a man sized riot in a court room, on the 9th floor of the police headquarter building at 1121 South State St””.

–The “Allah Temple of Islam”.
–“Moorish Mohammedan”.
–The original American “prophet” was Noble Drew Ali, a colored expressman in New Jersey.
–Noble Drew Ali founded the cult in 1924.
–The headquarters of the Chicago Branch were at 3743 South State St, a large building of yellow brick, which displays several photo’s posters with Turkish star and crescent.
–The headman of the temple in Chicago is Elijah Mohammed who signs his name, however, he also calls himself Farad Much-mul, or on more formal occasions, “Prophet W.D. Fard”. Elijah Mohammed is said to be a convincing and fluent speaker “with an apparent knowledge of the Arabic knowledge”.

“””The reason Elijah Muhammad used so many aliases was because other Muslim ministers who challenged his heirship of the Nation of Islam had pursued him sporadically since 1934 with the intent of killing him. Another reason was that police officers in several cities had been injured during fracases with Muslims and some were engaged in a vendetta against him. Ghulam Bogans was the alias he had used most recently, and that was the name on his arrest record when he was taken into custody in Washington on May 8, 1942, on charges of draft evasion.””

Allegedly, Satohashi Takahashi was trying to mobilize negroes against the U.S. government in 1942-1943.

“””……Satohashi Takahashi, a retired major of the imperial army, set up the “Pacific Movement of the Eastern World Inc.” aimed to convince negros that the yellow race, not the white, was their true friend.

He had branch offices in Chicago, Cleveland, Tulsa, Cincinatti, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Detroit and Gary. He said that Japan was about to invade America, that this was a white man’s war and no concern of the Negro, and that they should accumulate arms and ammunition to help the Japs when they got here.

No Relationship

The Negroes joined up, took his money, had a swell entertainment, but pitched the Black Dragon society’s scion in the pokey when he told Hoosier Negroes that they were brothers of the Japanese.

“‘Gulan Bogans, a Georgian Negro, swore he had run into Allah on a street in Detroit and Allah told him he (Bogans) really was Mohammed Elijah destined to lead his race into the ‘invisible empire of Islam’ and deliver it from the ‘North American Wilderness””.

Via the “New Pittsburgh Courier” (Sat, Aug 18, 1956 ·Page 10), readers of the newspaper seem to lash out at Elijah Muhammad and his version of fake Islam. Curiously, a man named Abul M. Fazl wrote that the truth about Islam could be found at “The American Fazl Mosque” at 2141 Leroy Place, NW, Washington 8, D.C. Abul M. Fazl also accused Elijah Muhammad of creating a “race religion”, superiority of any race is against Islam.

There is another comment by someone who seems to be Ahmadi also, a man named Yusuf Ahmad. Yusuf Ahmad said it was a shame that some people had been fooled by Elijah Muhammad, he is a fake! The Muslim world doesn’t accept him as even a Muslim. There are some positive comments too.

The untold story of black Muslims in America: Pioneering African-American Ahmadi Muslim converts, St Louis (alhakam.org)

Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam”, Ahmadiyya Gazzette, 1971, p. 4

Aside from socialising, education was a key part of this chapter; Sister Aziza particularly recalls The Philosophy of the Teachings of Islam and Where Did Jesus Die? as key texts that were frequently read by the early members – the former had to be read before taking allegiance. Her husband was fundamental in American Islam. Rashid Ahmad was the first African-American missionary to study in Rabwah, Pakistan, before returning to America. His long-time friend, Percy Smith, enquired about Islam on his own return, accepting the Movement soon after. He had been on his own journey and would host popular jazz musicians in California at his house to discuss spirituality and religion. He became a staunch proselytiser in his own right in St Louis, later re-locating and taking the name Saeed Ahmad. He would send letters, pass handbills and visit people’s homes to spread the message of Islam. He even sent a cablegram to Pakistan in repudiation of a false statement published in Lahore.

Maulvi Abdur Rahman Khan Bengali (aka A.R. Khan Bengali) slaughtered a goat for Eid and alleged that there were 500 Ahmadi’s in Dayton (out of which 200 are active), virtually all of whom are black, however, they have no connection with the Black Muslims via Elijah Poole. The Dayton Daily news alleges that the vast majority of black converts to Ahmadiyya were formerly Baptist or Methodist (See Dayton Daily News, Sun, Feb 07, 1971 ·Page 6).
