Intro
In 1933, the USA and Japan were big time allies, the U.S. was supplying them with weapons and oil to fight a proxy war vs. Russia/China, this was also called the Stimson Doctrine (1931-1941). In 1937, when war between Japan and China broke out following a minor clash between military units at the Marco Polo Bridge, the impotence of the “Stimson Doctrine” became even more apparent (See also the Neutrality Acts of the 1930s). In fact, the US government was simultaneously selling China oil and was the top supplier of oil in the entire world, and by a wide margin. Thus, all of these reports from 1933 seem to be ridiculous and a means of propaganda by the US Government, which was used to suppress Black people in the USA.

In the below, I sifted through 113 newspaper reports and found the proper facts of the case of Satohata Takashi (aka Satohashi Takahashi, Naka Nakane and Hirusho Kubo). Researchers before me like Evanzz and Morrow didn’t have access to these newspapers to the extent that I have had in 2025. In fact, Evanzz made wild claims and even alleged that Satohata Takashi had aligned himself Abdul Mohammed (former top minister of Wallace Farad, see Hatim)(See pages 137-138 on Kindle). However, he gave no reference for this story, he only referenced an unknown FBI report, and didn’t give the year, nor did he post where it could be found and verified. Evanzz even alleges that Satohata Takashi married 2 black woman in 1932, Cheaber McIntyre and Pearl T. Sherrod and again referenced FBI reports. I didn’t find either of these names in any newspaper report from 1931-1934. Moreover, Evanzz even quoted the Detroit Free Press, December 2, 1933, and tried to prove that the FBI arrested Satohata Takashi, however, I checked the newspaper and the article doesn’t even exist. For the record, the word Takashi appears in Evanzz roughly 125 times.

On Dec-3-1933, (6 months after Wallace Farad went missing), “The Kalamazoo Gazette” (of Sun, Dec 03, 1933 ·Page 4) reported that a youth named Satohata Takashi, was held in-custody for questioning by agents of the Department of Justice concerning his attempts to organize in Detroit, Mt. Clemens, Pontiac, and Flint a society known as “The Society for the Development of Our Own”. The police said they understood there were nearly 10,000 members of the society in the cities involved and said that Takahashi told them its purpose was the eventual overthrow of the Caucasian race by a union of other races. William Larson, chief of the Detroit bureau of the department of justice, said Takahashi probably will be deported. He said the youth had been in Michigan 6 months. With Takahashi were arrested George Oliki, Japanese, and William Johnson, and Emerson Sherwood, Negroes. They are held for questioning.

Beynon (1938) simply called him as ‘Major Takahashi, a reserve Japanese officer who sought to lead the Moslems to swear allegiance to the Mikado. Only a small minority of the members followed him into the new movement he organized-The Development of Our Own. With his deportation, this schismatic movement came to nought’ (see page 904). Beynon didn’t give any sources.

In 1939 (June-27), Satohata Takahashi was found in Detroit and promptly arrested wherein he offered $2000 to immigration authorities as a bribe and was given 3 years in jail (Leavenworth). Immigration Inspector Dorsey Philipps said Takahashi returned to the United States by the way of Buffalo, N.Y., last January bearing papers indicating he was Hirusho Kubo, a naturalized Canadian. This was in the court of Frank A. Picard.

In 1942, he should have been released from Leavenworth and deported.

In 1943, 10 years after his first arrest and a few days after the famous Detroit race riots (June 20-22, 1943), a newspaper published a story wherein it connected Black insurrection with the Japanese and WW-2. Martin Dies was assigned to investigate the matter further. The newspaper gave the name of Naka Nakane as an alias of Satohata Takashi via Detroit’s FBI records. The FBI reports are the main source of info herein. Naka Nakane aka Satohata Takashi is said to be a former Major in the Japanese Army. Major Takahashi was allegedly arrested on Dec-2-1933 in Detroit for inciting American Negroes against the U.S. Government and allegedly had 10,000 members. Takahashi was deported in 1934. However, he allegedly re-appeared in 1939 in Detroit and was arrested again and jailed at Fort Leavenworth for 3 years, until 1942?

5 months later, Nov-Dec-1943, Satohashi Takahashi (his first name was spelled incorrectly) was mentioned 56 times in American newspapers in (and once in 1944). Satohashi Takahashi was mentioned by J. Edgar Hoover (First ever Director of the FBI) as he connected him to Elijah Mohammed (aka Gulan Bogans) and other anti-US government Black organizations.

He was never heard of again!

“”Detroit.–Satohata Takahashi, a 48-year-old retired Japanese Army Officer, has been arrested and will be deported for illegal entry into this country. Takahashi was arrested by officers of the special investigation squad on complaint of several “Negro leaders”.

The officers declared that Takahashi was the organizer and moving spirit in the ‘Society for the Development of Our Own”, an organization which preaches, according to Takahashi, the doctrine of good will and the uplift of dark races. The officers, however, think that the Japanese is a leader of a plot to overthrow the Caucasian race.

Officers who made the arrest claim that the “Society for the Development of Our Own” has a membership of more than 10,000, the majority of whom are Negroes. The other members are Chinese and East Indians. Takahashi, according to police, is known as the ‘Little God of the East’ among his followers, and he has the ability to rouse his hearers into a fervor at his lectures.

Has Large Audiences

Takahashi came into the colored neighborhood about 6 months ago, informing his audiences that he was a retired army officer who was doing volunteer work in behalf of the dark races. He spoke at numerous meetings in the community and was always greeted by a large and enthusiastic audience.

In his meetings Takahashi always stressed the fact that the Negro needed to get out and help himself instead of relying upon the members of the Caucasian group. He also said that Japan was vitally interested in what the Negro was doing in America and was extending an invitation to them to visit Japan””.

“””Detroit. — Found guilty of attempting to bribe two Federal officers, last June, Naka Nakane, alias Satohata Takahashi, alleged Japanese agent, was sentenced Thursday by Federal Judge Frank A. Picard to serve three years in the Federal prison at Leavenworth, Kan., and to pay a fine of $4500.

According to the statute, that is the maximum penalty.

Immediately after the judge had sentenced the 64-year old Jap, two women spectators were heard to threaten the life of the judge, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation was ordered to locate the pair, who left the court immediately, according to two women jurors.

Deported in 1934

Nakane, or Takahashi, came to Detroit in 1933, and a short time later began the organization of the Development of Our Own, of which he was high potentate, with subsidiaries in Pontiac, Flint, Mt. Clemens, and other nearby cities. He was arrested by Federal agents in 1934, charged with attempting to organize a subversive movement among colored people and deported. He returned last February, allegedly on a false passport.

Before his deportation, Takahashi married a colored woman in Toledo. Mrs. Takahashi attempted to carry on his work, but internal dissension soon split the organization. Takahashi, according to members, maintained an office in Toronto.

When captured here in June, in a house at 20125 Washburn Avenue, a young colored woman told officers that she was Takahashi’s secretary and that she planned to marry him, although she was already married and the mother of two children””.

Allegedly, Satohashi Takahashi was trying to mobilize negroes against the U.S. government in 1942-1943.

“””……Satohashi Takahashi, a retired major of the imperial army, set up the “Pacific Movement of the Eastern World Inc.” aimed to convince negros that the yellow race, not the white, was their true friend.

He had branch offices in Chicago, Cleveland, Tulsa, Cincinatti, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Detroit and Gary. He said that Japan was about to invade America, that this was a white man’s war and no concern of the Negro, and that they should accumulate arms and ammunition to help the Japs when they got here.

No Relationship

The Negroes joined up, took his money, had a swell entertainment, but pitched the Black Dragon society’s scion in the pokey when he told Hoosier Negroes that they were brothers of the Japanese.

“‘Gulan Bogans, a Georgian Negro, swore he had run into Allah on a street in Detroit and Allah told him he (Bogans) really was Mohammed Elijah destined to lead his race into the ‘invisible empire of Islam’ and deliver it from the ‘North American Wilderness””.

This took hold in several places with all the pomp and popularity of a paid-up burial society. Every recruit got a fancy Moslem name, but pretty soon, the dues got too heavy and the boys told the FBI about Gulan””.

Satokata Takahashi – Wikipedia

Satokata Takahashi, born Naka Nakane (中根 中Nakane Naka, 1870–1954[1]) was also known as Satokata TakahishiSatokata TakahashiinTaka Ashe, and his first name was sometimes rendered as Satakata. Takahashi was a self-described major of the Imperial Japanese Army and affiliate of the Black Dragon Society. According to FBI reports he was the instigator of the Pacific Movement of the Eastern World, working through Ashima Takis.[2]

Background

[edit]

When Mimo De Guzman was arrested by the FBI on July 30, 1942, he revealed that Takahashi was “a Japanese National” that was “the real power behind such groups as the Pacific Movement of the Eastern World, the Onward Movement of America and the Ethiopian Pacific Movement.[3]

Personal life

[edit]

Elijah Muhammad was friends with Takahashi, and Takahashi’s wife, Pearl Sherrod was formerly a member of the Nation of Islam.[4]

Influence

[edit]

In the 1940s Selective Service registrars noticed African Americans in Chicago, Detroit, and several other large cities were refusing to register under religious grounds and described themselves as Muslim. They also were not seeking an exemption as conscientious objectors. Around this same time the FBI was receiving reports that Japan was funding African American groups that were radical and wanted a racial revolution. In April 1942, the FBI used undercover officers to infiltrate a group.[5]

Black Dragon society

[edit]

Through Takahashi, the Black Dragon society channeled financial aid to Black Muslim groups in the US.[6]

Society for the Development of Our Own

[edit]

Takahashi’s Society for the Development of Our Own was a major organization in Black America responsible for the dissemination of pro-Japanese propaganda.[4] He recruited several thousand members to the Pan-Asian cause, most of them of African-American, Filipino, or East Asian descent. The “Five Guiding Principles” of the group were “Freedom, Justice, Equality, Liberty, and Honour.”[7]

Nation of Islam

[edit]

In 1939 the FBI charged that Nakane had been an influential presence in the Nation of Islam.[8] He spoke as a guest at the NOI temples in Detroit and Chicago. He also influenced Elijah Muhammad‘s attitude towards the Japanese government. The FBI had a copy of a speech from 1933 where Mohammad proclaimed that the Japanese would kill the White man.

FBI informants noted that NOI’s flag of a white crescent and white moon with a red background was similar to Japan’s flag of a red sun with white rays on a red background. They also noted that the flag was similar to Turkey, whose population is mostly Muslim, and that the flag was similar to Soviet Union’s whose flag is red with a single star and sickle.

Nakane was deported and moved to Canada. When he tried to return, he was charged with attempting to bribe an immigration officer and illegal entry. He received a 3-year sentence on this charge. Upon his release, he was interned for the duration of the war.[9][10]

In an interview with the FBI Elijah Mohammad claimed he met Takahashi at a woman’s house, but could not recall who the woman was. He went there to pick up Brother Abdul Mohammad. Mohammad also claimed that Takahashi stayed at Abdul’s house for several weeks because he was recovering from an illness. Additionally, Mohammad claimed that he and Takahashi discussed NOI and that Takahashi approved of his teachings.[5]

The poster was of a map of the United States with Fard in the center, and was entitled “Calling the Four Winds.” From each of the four directions there were guns that said “Asia” aimed at the US. Takahashi’s poster was almost identical, except Takahashi was in the center. “Calling the Four Winds” is a speech written by Cheaber McIntyre, Takahashi’s mistress.[5]
