Intro
On Nov-22-1932, after the sacrificial murder of James J. Smith by Robert Harris on November 20, 1932 (See Detroit Free Press of Tue, Nov 22, 1932 Page 1 and 3), Detroit police were tipped off and raided a “Negro Temple” in Detroit (at 3408 Hastings St., Detroit) and found a man named Ugan Ali (also spelled as Eugan Ali) (as well as many other American newspapers) as the highest ranking member. When questioned by police, Ugan Ali claimed to be God of the Asiatics (his followers). Wallace Farad is not mentioned at all, nor was he found in the temple. The Detroit police then explained to Ugan Ali how Robert Harris was blaming his murder of James J. Smith on Ugan Ali, his God. Ugan Ali told the police that he had been teaching for 3 years (since 1929-1930?). Ugan Ali was arrested and taken into custody.
On Nov-23-1932, the Detroit police arrested Wallace Farad coming out of his hotel room at 1 W. Jefferson Avenue, Detroit. Farad was smiling enigmatically. He did not resist arrest. At police Headquarters, Farad evaded questions cleverly and had the smile of a complacent Oriental Fakir. Farad told detectives that he is the “supreme being on Earth”. Farad admitted to teaching Ugan Ali about Islam and Ugan had helped Farad start the Detroit chapter. Farad makes money via collections from his gullible followers and proceeds from his sales as a representative for a printing firm, said Farad himself. Each member of the cult is required to have an “identification card”, which Farad sold for a fee. Farad said that there were no funds in his cult’s treasury. Farad alleges that he has started a fund to pay an overdue electric bill in the temple. Farad alleges that Harris and Ugan Ali had misunderstood his teachings, and human sacrifices were not tolerated in his cult. Farad said that the death penalty is only for those who “disturb the peace in our temples”. Farad alleged to have members in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. (See the Detroit Free Press of Thu, Nov 24, 1932 ·Page 1). Four others were also detained, Abe Mohammed, Ocler Zareff, Corenlius Bey and Wallace Mohammed (See the Detroit News, Thursday, Nov-24, 1932).
On Nov-24-1932, 500 Negroes marched upon the Detroit police station and demanded the release of Wallace Farad, Ugan Ali, Robert Harris and others, they were led by the wife of Ugan Ali, a woman named Lillie Ali (See the Detroit Free Press of Fri, Nov 25, 1932 ·Page 1).
On Nov-25-1932, Ugan Ali and Wallace Farad (Arabian leader) are held at the “Psychopathic Ward of Receiving Hospital”. 200 members of the cult spent the day on the main floor of the Recorder’s Court Building (See the Detroit Free Press of Sat, Nov 26, 1932 ·Pages 1 and 2).
On Wed, Nov 30, 1932 ·Page 3, the Detroit Free Press reports that the Five-Day Diagnosis of Robert Harris, Ugan Ali and Wallace Farad at the Hospital had ended. They reported that the mental processes of Ugan Ali, Negro leader of Detroit’s voodoo cult, are not those of a normal person, physicians at Receiving Hospital said Tuesday. In terms of Wallace Farad, confessed “Arabian” founder of the cult, the hospital reported that apparently he was not driven into his sinister teachings through insanity.
On Wed, Dec-7-1932, the Detroit Free Press reported that Robert Harris was deemed as “insane” and sent to the Iona State Hospital for the criminally insane. Wallace Farad was released from prison and voluntarily pledged to leave Detroit and never return. Ugan Ali was also released and he promised to disband the cult after he realized the dangers of it.
Ugan Ali was never heard of again.
