Title: Modesty

Question: What is the command regarding the gaze of men?

Answer: The first command is to lower one’s gaze, and the second is to guard one’s private parts. If someone has their eyes set on women, then the meaning of lowering the gaze is not to look at them again and again. The first look is permissible, but the second is not.

Question: How should a woman be viewed?

Answer: A woman should be viewed with such modesty that it is not appropriate to look at her with lust, regardless of her dress. Especially, in a place where there is a chance of mischief, and as the Hadiths have instructed, the way of the righteous Salaf (predecessors) was to lower their gaze.

Reference: Sahih Bukhari

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

  • “And the prayer of a woman who leaves her home while showing her adornments will not be accepted until she returns home and removes her adornments.”
  • (Reference: Ibn Hibban)**

Another Hadith states:

  • “And the prayer of a woman who leaves her home and does not cover herself will not be accepted until she returns home and covers herself.”
  • (Reference: Tabrani)

Allah has stated in the Holy Qur’an:

  • “And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and to guard their chastity, and not to display their adornment except what appears thereof.”
  • (Surah An-Nur, verse 31)
