A former Yorkshire MP who was jailed for sexually assaulting a young boy has been released from prison.
Imran Ahmad Khan, 49, was jailed for 18 months in May 2022 after being convicted of sexual assault following a trial at Southwark Crown Court. Jurors heard how Khan had sexually assaulted a teenage boy after a party in 2008. The boy came forward just days after Khan won his seat in Wakefield in the December 2019 general election.
The former MP was expelled from the Conservative Party and resigned. His resignation triggered a by-election. Khan lodged an appeal against his conviction and sentence late last year and the Court of Appeal heard from his lawyers who argued his conviction was “unsafe” because the case against him was “weak” and was bolstered by “bad character evidence.” They also argued his jail term was too long for the offence and should have been suspended. However, both appeals were dismissed by three senior judges.
During the trial earlier last year, jurors heard how Khan had forced his 15-year-old victim to drink gin and tonic and asked him to watch pornography at a house party in Staffordshire in January 2008.
He then went on to touch the boy’s feet and legs and went within a “hair’s breadth” of his privates as he tried to sleep in a bunkbed. The victim – now an adult – said he was left feeling “scared, vulnerable, numb, shocked and surprised” by the attack. He made the allegation to the Conservative Party and said he was “not taken very seriously” and made a complaint to police days after Khan won his seat.
As he was jailed, Mr Justice Baker told him he had shown no remorse and said: “The only regret you feel is towards yourself for having found yourself in the predicament you face as a result of your actions some 14 years ago.”
Khan showed no emotion as he was taken down to the cells, carrying, among his possessions, a bag from an upmarket men’s grooming shop. Mr Justice Baker said he had displayed a “significant degree of brutality” in the lead up to the assault, as he dragged his victim upstairs and threw him on to a bed.
“I am satisfied that the complainant was particularly vulnerable, and not only was he 15 years of age at the date of the offence, but I accept his mother’s description that he was not very worldly and very young for his age,” he said. Although it may well be, over the years, you had let yourself believe you had got away with having committed this offence, I am sure you were aware from the outset there was a risk there would be a day of reckoning.”
Khan has now been released with pictures reportedly showing him leaving HMP Brixton on the morning of February 21. He has served nine months of his 18-month sentence in custody.
