Intro
In the 1902-1903 era, MGA lied and told the world that Hassan Al-Basri believed that Eisa (as) had died. MGA also said that Hassan Al-Basri still believed in the 2nd coming of Eisa (as)(See Mawahibur-Rahman page 68). Even Suyuti quotes Basri for 4:159 and 43:61 and the physical return of Eisa (as).
However, as we all know, Hassan Al-Basri is quoted by At-Tabari and Asqalani as saying:
“The Messenger of Allahsaw said to the Jews, ‘Jesus has not died, he will return to you before the Doomsday.’” (Al-Tabari H.7133)
Hassan Al-Basri also seems to be in the chain of transmitters for the famous weak hadith, “No Mahdi except Eisa (as). This weak hadith only means that Eisa (as) will be guided (mahdi).

“””Those who do not ponder upon the Book of Allah and whose hearts do not seek the truth and wisdom, they say that it is proven that Jesus is alive, for Hasan al-Basri said that Jesus did not die and shall return in the latter days. The answer to this is that we do not believe in anyone from Basra or Egypt.”””

Abi Ja’fir seems to be the weak link in this particular report. The report also found in Tafsir Ibn Kathīr and Tafsir Ibn Abi Hātim.

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalaani in Fat-hul Baari, Vol. 6, page 568, he says regarding 4:159:
“…it means that they must (all) believe in Eisa (as), before the death of Eisa (as), and this was positively asserted by Ibn Abbas..with an authentic chain…and Hasan (Al-Basri) said, I swear by Allah that he Eisa (as) is alive right now and this was cited by most of the people of knowledge and this view was favored by Ibn Jarir (At-Tabari) and others…”

Hassan al-Basri (d. 110 A.H.):
عن الحسن في قوله } وخاتم النبيين { قال : ختم الله النبيين بمحمد صلى الله عليه
وسلم ، وكان آخر من بعث
“It is narrated from Hassan [al-Basri] said about the word of Allâh, “Wa Khātam un-Nabiyyin”: “Allâh completed the series of the Prophets through Muhammad, may Allâh bless him, and he is last [of them] in being raised.””

Imam Suyuti on the physical descent of Esa (as) – ahmadiyyafactcheckblog
“I swear to God that Jesus (AS) is at this moment alive in God’s presence, and that everyone will believe in him when he returns.” With regard to the Holy Qur’an 4:159, he said: “God raised Jesus (AS) to His presence. He will send him before the Day of Judgment as a holder of rank. Good and bad, all will believe in him.” (Al-Suyuti, Durr al-Manthur, 2:284) He also made a similar comment regarding the Holy Qur’an 43:61, saying that the meaning of the verse was that Jesus (AS) would return to earth.””
