From 1910 to 1929, Auto Manufactures like Ford refused to hire black people

Intro
From roughly 1910 to 1929, black people were totally shunned in America in terms of good paying jobs. There are many instances of this. I would like to highlight the auto manufactures.

In 1920, Mufti Muhammad Sadiq showed up and started telling black people that they weren’t Negroes, they had been lied to by white people and discriminated (See the Qadiani sales pitch to the American Negro). He also told them that their original language was Arabic (exactly what MGA said).

Per Ahmadiyya sources, Sheikh Abdus Salam was originally Reverend BD Sutton. He converted between October 1922 and January 1923. Mufti Muhammad Sadiq delivered five lectures in Detroit at the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) meetings; out of the 40 converts, one of them, Mufti Sahib said, was an enthusiastic young man with the name Rev Sutton. Rev. BD Sutton, who became the enthusiastic Ahmadiyya preacher Sheikh Abdus Salam, had been one of at least 40 pan-Africanist Garveyites that joined the movement following Sadiq’s five lectures to the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Detroit. Mirza Tahir Ahmad alleges that Elijah Muhammad was there too and also converted.

Nevertheless, per this source, in 1914, Henry Ford decided to pay his workers, through a profit-sharing plan, $5.00 a day to stabilize a volatile workforce. When he makes this decision, his workforce of 14,000 at his Highland Park plant is 75% white foreign-born. At the time, Ford, like all automobile manufacturers, refused to hire Black people. From 1914 to 1917, Ford only employed about 200 Black workers, mostly janitors, out of 15,000 workers at his Highland Park plant.

By 1917, the first significant migration of African Americans from the South is well underway, with 25,000 blacks arriving in Detroit. At this time, other than a few janitors, Ford does not hire Black employees; therefore, we must conclude the notion that Black workers came to Detroit because of the $5.00 a day job at Ford is not entirely accurate. A closer look reveals racism is pushing Black families out of the South and they are not coming North solely for jobs.

In late 1922, Mufti Muhammad Sadiq began giving African-American’s the title of “Sheikh”. Thus, Sheikh Ahmad Din was the first ever African-American to become an Ahmadi missionary (Sheikh)(however, without going to jamia). He appears in the Moslem Sunrise of July-1922 (see page 119). There were many others who were grandfathered in and made Sheikh‘s by Mufti Muhammad Sadiq, we don’t have a full list because a full list was never published, however, the al-hakam makes many errors. In Detroit, a Christan named Rev. BD Sutton converted to Qadianism and became an enthusiastic Ahmadiyya preacher, with the new name of Sheikh Abdus Salam, he was one of at least 40 pan-Africanist Garveyites that joined the movement following Sadiq’s five lectures to the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Detroit. The Ahmadiyya Movement empowered African American’s to act like they knew Islam, the case of the “Indigenous Sheikhs”, who eventually created their own social entrepreneurial businesses – ahmadiyyafactcheckblog

By 1930, 100,000 people work at the massive Ford Rouge plant, and 10% (10,000) are Black. There are more Black employees at Ford than all of the other automobile manufacturers and their suppliers combined. With no formal education, Black Detroiters are probably making more money at that time than their peers around the world. Moreover, this workforce attracted other Black professionals from around the nation to Detroit, black lawyers, doctors, dentists, and educators, and as a result, there was the development of the Black business community – Paradise Valley. So, Ford’s business decision has a historical domino effect.

Summary

In 1914 Ford Motor Company established the Ford English School, where the automaker’s diverse immigrant employees could learn the English language and take civics lessons in preparation for becoming U.S. citizens. At the graduation ceremony, students wearing clothing from their native countries descended into a large “American Melting Pot” and emerged wearing homogenous suits and waving American flags.
