Promise of ‘Jihad of pen’

Article content
Asfand Suleman Ahmad has come to Cornwall to spread his message of peace as missionary to the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community.
Suleman Ahmad, a theology major who spent seven years studying in Mississauga, leads prayers at the mosque on Balmoral Avenue, but will also be reaching out to the broader community – “to win hearts,” he said.
These efforts begin with an open house Saturday, from 5–9 p.m., for those interested in learning more.
“We are here to spread the teachings of Islam and Ahmadiyya,” he said. “We are here to present a positive view of Islam.”
Islam receives a bad rap in the media, with connections to violence and bombings – including the Boston marathon bombings – bantered about.
But Suleman Ahmad wants to clarify that jihad doesn’t mean war – it just means “strife” for God.
He said he is here for “jihad of pen” – writing and preaching – “but I am empty handed.”
“Right now it is unfair that Islam has been represented by extremists and we are out to defend Islam,” he said.
The Ahmadiyya following is small in Cornwall – and in Canada, with just over 30,000 in the country.
But they are widespread, with a following in over 200 countries worldwide.
The Ahmadiyya are a branch of Islam who believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was the second coming of messiah that Islam – and other religions – preach of.
Followers of all Muslim beliefs are currently in the midst of Ramadhan – a month-long devotion that includes fasting alongside the five-times daily prayers.
Suleman Ahmad said this is a time for forgiveness and dedication to Allah.
The fasting ends Aug. 8 with Eid.
Suleman Ahmad, however, is not going anywhere soon, remaining to continue to lead the local mosque.
An open house will be held at their 341 Balmoral Ave. location July 20 between 5 – 9 p.m.
