Intro
In 1933, in Ohio, Sunni Islam began to spread in places that were originally sown by Ahmadis. One of the most active Sunni missionaries during this period was an Albanian Muslim living in Mansfield named Muharrem Nadji, whose efforts had been stimulated in 1933 by contact with both the Lahori Ahmadis and the Qadianis’ Sufi Bengalee, who arrived in Mansfield that year (See Bowen). A few years later, Muharrem Nadji allegedly became the Lahori-Ahmadi representative in America (See Bowen, The DNA of American Islam) while working a corporate job at Empire Steel (See the Mansfield News Journal, June 8, 1954, Page 1) and while working on his own small venture, Islamic Center of America, which seems to be at the micro level.
In May of 1933, Dr. Sufi M.R. Bengalee is mentioned in the Mansfield News Journal of Thu, May 18, 1933 ·Page 2 (See also “Press Notices,” Moslem Sunrise 6, no. 3 & 4 [1933]: 39;, via Bowen). Bengalee was in Mansfield, Ohio and looking for converts, Bengalee held a meeting at 760 Bowman St. The newspaper alleges that there are 10 Muslims in Mansfield, Ohio in 1933. Bengalee made comments on the great depression and the Islamic economic model.
By 1934, Ahmadiyya was dead in Mansfield, Ohio and never returned.
