Intro
In 1894, via the Evening World of Fri, Jul 13, 1894 ·Page 2 and the Algona Courier of Fri, Aug 24, 1894 ·Page 2 (and roughly 100 newspapers in America) a woman named Nafeesa (aka M.T. Keep) has completely exposed Muhammed Webb as a fraudster. Nafeesa (aka M.T. Keep)(editor of the Voice of Islam newspaper) has been at war with Muhammed Webb for about 6 weeks. She even wrote a letter to the Sultan of Turkey about Muhammed Webb being a fraudster. Nafeesa (aka M.T. Keep) called Webb a monster. In July, Mrs. Keep locked herself in the business office of The Voice of Islam newspaper (also called the Moslem World).
Nafeesa (aka M.T. Keep) alleged that Muhammed Webb was using the Theosophical society against her and have hired Judge Hawes a lawyer vs. her. It seems that the Theosophical society (and American Muslim Brotherhood) was accusing her of theft. Nafeesa (aka Mrs. Keep) alleges that Webb was lying about a lack of funds, she says that she saw a check for $500 from Osman Nauri Effendi (Osman Nuri Pasha?). In the end, Mrs. Keep called Muhammed Webb a fake prophet who was in reality raising money to spend on himself.
Somewhat surprisingly, Quilliam’s Institute continued to have a small American presence for a few years, even after the departure of Lant, Nabakoff, and Keep. It seems, judging by the number of appearances of Americans in Quilliam’s journal, the Crescent, by 1895 it had become the main competitor for Webb’s Islamic newspaper. That year, Quilliam’s magazine published
numerous stories and news briefs concerning Nabakoff, Lant, and Keep, as well as several letters from Americans—including converts, Muslim immigrants, and non-Muslim sympathizers—known to be associates of the three Webb dissenters (See Bowen, A History of Conversion to Islam in the United States, Volume 1, White American Muslims before 1975).
