Intro
It seems that in 1886, MGA was busy sending letters all over the world about his “Barahin-i-Ahmadiyya” and how it would contain 300 arguments. MGA seems to have also sent a letter to Henry Steel Olcott and the “Theosophist” magazine and society, which was operating out of Madras, India (edition of Sep-1886). Alexander Russel Webb (who was also a member of the Theosophical society) read this article (see the scans in the below) and began sending letters to MGA from the USA. How much did MGA pay for this advertisement? MGA was lying about having 10,000 rupees. This entire scenario was posted in the Ahmadiyya Gazette of 2017 and written by Dr. Tahir Ijaz.

In 1893 (Feb-25), Webb’s mission was published in The New York Times of Sat, Feb 25, 1893 ·Page 1. In this, Webb admits to still being a member of the Theosophical society, and still a follower of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, often known as Madame Blavatsky, was a Russian and American mystic and writer who co-founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. She gained an international following as the primary founder of Theosophy as a belief system. Webb alleged that Theosophy and esoteric Muhammadanism are almost identical. Webb then says that practical Muhammadanism is different. The newspaper also alleged that Webb was a Jeweler in Chicago and that Webb is supposed to build a mosque in America with 150,000 from the Muslims of Madras, India.

In 1894 (Mar-23), the Putnam County Leader of Fri, Mar 23, 1894 ·Page 2 told the world that Mohammed Alexander Russell Webb will speak in St. Louis next Sunday afternoon (Apr-2) at the Grand Opera House. Webb was a follower of “Theosophy” and a fast friend of Eugene Field. Webb discussed polygamy at the Great Conference of Religions in 1893 in Chicago.

In 1894 (Nov-16), via The Jewish Voice of Fri, Nov 16, 1894 ·Page 6, reports on Mohammed Alexander Russel Webb’s lecture (“Why I am a Mussalman”) at the Unity Club that was abruptly cut short on account of indisposition. Reverend E.A. Coil read out the remainder of the speech as best as he could. It was not a good speech. Theosophical beliefs and Unitarian beliefs are also discussed and represented at this conference.

In 1912 (via Fanusie), an enthusiastic American Theosophist hailed the Teachings of Islam, a collection of Ghulam Ahmad’s writings translated specifically for a European and American readership as a well-written and admirable presentation of Islam, suited to attract and not repel Christian and Jews. He wrote, we have read with pleasure and profit a small volume entitled The Teachings of Islam, which has been sent us from the office of The Review of Religions, Punjab, India. To us it seems the best and most attractive presentation of the Faith of Muhammad which we have yet come across. It is the work of the late Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and has been most admirably translated from Urdu by Muhammad Ali of Qadian. Few are the passages to which the broad-minded Christian or Jew need take exception, and many are the stimulating thoughts and expositions which would find an echo in the hearts of lovers of God in any religion…Admirably calculated to appeal to the student of comparative religion, who will find exactly what he wants to know as to Muhammadan doctrines on souls and bodies, the three worlds, divine existence, moral law and much else (See “Opinions on the Teachings on Islam”, The Review of Religions, July 1912, Volume XI, NO. 7, 290).

In 1913 (May-24), via the Folkestone Herald of Sat, May 24, 1913 ·Page 7, it is reported that next Saturday evening (May-31), Khwaja Kamaluddin is scheduled to speak (8:30PM) about “Islam and Theosophy”, at Bouverie chambers, tickets are at the door.

The lecture will be given on Saturday, May-31 at 8:30pm. The name of the lecture is “Islam and Theosophy”. On Sunday, June-1, Khwaja Kamaluddin will give a lecture on “Woman in Islam”. Khwaja Kamaluddin is presented as the leader of Islam in the UK. The British Government has more Muslims than any other group of minorities.

In 1913 (Jun), via the Folkestone Herald of Sat, Jun 07, 1913 ·Page 9 reports that Khwaja Kamaluddin recently gave a lecture on “Islam and Theosophy”, Captain Bargrave Deane presided. The Cork Constitution of 8 June 1885, reporting on the invitation he received from the Promised Messiahas, wrote:

“Mr Bradlaugh has received a curious invitation, which many people will probably hope he may accept, Mirza Gulam Ahmad who says that he has been commissioned by the Almighty, has sent the junior member for Northampton by registered letter an invitation to visit the Punjab, there to be converted to Islamism, and he offers to guarantee Mr Bradlaugh 200 rupees per month with food and lodging. Mr Bradlaugh has the invitation under his serious consideration.”

MGA announced (as published by The Theosophist):

“Now, if you do not come [here], you will, yourself, be answerable to God. After awaiting your arrival for three months, the statement of your indifference will, ipso facto, be noted in the book as stated above, but in case you do come, and fail to behold any heavenly signs during your stay with me for the time specified, you shall be paid Rs. 200 per mensem (besides food and accommodation), which will be supplied free to all) as compensation to cover your damages, or as a recovery of fine in default of my promise. If you deem this sum inadequate to your dignity, I am even ready to pay as damages or fine for unfulfilling promise, whatever suitable sum you propose yourself, proportionate to your rank, if it be but not beyond my means.”

To whom it may concern

“At the rooms of Grand Rapids Lodge Theosophical Society Dr MM Sadiq gave a most illuminating lecture on the subject, ‘What Islam Really Is,’ which was the subject requested or formulated by his audience. The doctor unmistakably cleared up the old superstitions in regard to his religion and gave us a new view of it. It is a pleasure to recommend Dr Sadiq to all who are interested in Truth.

“Respectfully, Erma T Mclouth, FTS. Grand Rapids, Michigan, 7 November 1921.”

Mirza Kabir-ud-Din Ahmad

[Mirza Kabir-ud-Din Ahmad is] a volunteer evangelist of Ahmadia Movement who is always ingenious in carrying the word of God to every corner of the society and around Lucknow, the old capital of Mughal kings of Hindustan. We give below an extract from his article specially written for this journal, [The Moslem Sunrise], on [Jehad]:

Jehad

“Islam never allowed the use of the sword for spreading the religion. On the other hand, it strictly prohibits compulsion in matters of faith. It has the plain injunction in the Quran, ‘There shall be no compulsion in religion.’

“When the idolators of Arabia, exasperated at the progress of Islam, came down upon them the Moslems in Medina to extirpate them, only then the Moslems took up the swords to defend their women and children and themselves from aggressing enemy.

“The Moslem battles were, therefore, not undertaken for gaining converts, but to protect innocent Moslem lives.

“It must also be stated here that permission for self-defence and murdering the enemies of Islam was not given to the Moslems until the Arabs had, on account of their excessive oppressions and outrages and innocent bloodshed, rendered themselves culpable and liable to be punished with death. But a clemency was even then shown to such of them as embraced Islam. The unity of religion established the relation of brotherhood and all past wrongs were forgotten. It is here that some opponents of Islam have stumbled and from this they have drawn the conclusion that their new religion was forced upon the unbelievers. In fact, the case is just the reverse of what the objectors have thought.

“The Islamic truths had been brought home to them and they well understood the futility of idol worship, therefore His Mercy offered them an opportunity, even after the sentence was justly pronounced against them, for imploring His pardon and the forgiveness of their sins.

“Islam had to grapple with many difficulties. Religious prejudice was so strong at the time that if a member of any tribe adopted the faith of Islam, he was either put to death or threatened with it, and persecution was so severe that life seemed a burden to him. Islam had, therefore, to face the difficulty of establishing freedom of religious exercises and for this noble object it had to undertake wars. It is deplorable that even in these days of civilization and peace, the barbarous prejudiced nominal Christians cannot conceal their hereditary enmity towards others.

“The recent wanton and unprovoked attacks of the Italians and the Balkan states on the poor Muhammadans in Tripoli and Turkey, accompanied with barbarous slaughter, and the cruel treatment meted out to the poor helpless Moslem women and children coupled with the pope’s declaration of the Holy War have reminded us of the Crusades of the middle ages. While some Christian nations in the East aggressively practicing Jehad, while the poor Moslem is being slaughtered for being a Moslem, the Christian writers are still busy in writing articles to say that Islam preached Jehad.

“However, as a British subject, I must express my thankfulness to the British Government for the religious freedom we are all enjoying in India.”

East meets West

Our learned Sister Rahatullah has been married to our dear brother Mr Mustafa Taha, Ahmadi, with the dowry of 51 dollars and we honestly hope and pray that this marriage will be as successful and happy as many others between the Eastern and Western lovers have been. Allah bless Mr and Mrs Taha with a blissful married life, the sun of love shining through. May joy, peace and happiness be their lot through life, and may we some day meet them both with good Bashir at our headquarters in India.

Love knows no limits of East or West.

Marry the boy you find the best.

West meets East and East meets West.

A mosque in Paris

The cornerstone of the Moslem Mosque has been laid in Paris in sight of Notre Dame Cathedral. It is to occupy whole block dominated by the municipality in the old historic quarters of Paris. The institute will have a library, hotel and Turkish bath in addition to the mosque. […]

I love the Maker

I love the Maker when I see what He has made.

From flowers the praises of the Gardener I recall –

Through every beauty doth my love pervade.

My love, my Lord, my wondrous All-in-All.

Wondrous His beauty, who made the beauteous face –

Wondrous His wisdom, who made man so wise –

How great is He, who planted through His grace,

The seed of His great love in man to rise.

The world is full of nights and full of days.

The nights are dark, but the glad days are bright –

When it is day, I revel in the sun’s warm rays,

When darkness falls, I kindle my inward light.

So, I am never in the dark, for with my clear searchlight,

Which has been granted [to] me through His grace,

I search to find rare pearls and diamonds bright,

And, searching, find my prizes, though they’re somewhat scarce.

Pearls there are in words – diamonds in deeds.

In roses, and in rosy faces everywhere they are.

But best of all, the lofty mind that leads

All to Heaven’s bliss, from both near and far.

I admire those minds of old and new,

From Adam to Noah, Abraham and Moses,

Elijah, David and all the Prophet Hebrew

Muhammad[sa], the Master-mind, and lowly Jesus.

Buddha, Zoroaster, Krishna Celestial –

All spring from the One Great and Good Guardian.

So taught my Master the latest of them all

The Prophet Ahmad[as] of Quadian in Hindustan.
