Intro
Born as Edmund Gregory, on June 23, 1925. He was born in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Edmund Gregory first played alto saxophone professionally for Luther Henderson aged 13, and studied at the Boston Conservatory, and to perform with trumpeter Roy Eldridge.
He played lead alto with Fletcher Henderson in the mid-1940s. By the late 1940s, an African-American Muslim jazz community had formed in New York City. In 1947 Brooklyn, musicians gathered under the leadership of the saxophonist Sahib Shihab (See “Billy Rowe’s Note Book,” Pittsburgh Courier, August 9, 1947, 16, via Bowen). Talib Dawood was also in NY, it is unclear if they were working together at this point.
Sahib Shihab was spotted by the famous ex-Ahmadi Usman Barry at the Ahmadiyya temple in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1981(however, most likely he had Ahmadiyya beliefs, and was not a formal chanda paying Ahmadi). Abdul Karim (from Chicago) is the father of Amatus Sami-Karim (she is the wife of Mahershala Ali), he alleges that Sahib Shihab was an Ahmadi and may have quit later.
Shihab died from liver cancer on October 24, 1989, in Nashville, Tennessee, United States, aged 64.
