Intro
In 1891, MGA and his team alleged that Muhammad (Saw) didn’t know the full details of the “Beast from the Earth”, in Arabic as “Dābbat al-Arḍ” (naozobillah)(See RK-3, page 473
Izala Auham).

In 1893, MGA and his team wrote that the meaning of “Beast from the Earth”, in Arabic as “Dābbat al-Arḍ” only meant “the evil scholars, since they preach from their anus and not their mouth”(see Hamamatul Bushra)(RK-7, p 308). This is via 27:82 of the Quran (27:83 of the Kadiani Koran).

In 1902, MGA accused Muslims of fabricating stories in hadith about the so-called worm of the earth (dabba-tul-ard) and the Antichrist. MGA alleged that the term dabba-tul-ard (worm of the earth) actually refers to a termite which is devoid of all good; it devours wood, dust, etc. It is characterized by the nature to consume and desires to expunge all that is good. It possesses a fiery nature. (See Al-Hakam, vol. 6, dated 24 November 1902, pp. 1-2. Malfuzat-4, page 136)(Al-Hakam, vol. 6, no. 17, dated 10 May 1902, pp. 5-6, Al-Hakam, vol. 6, no. 18, dated 17 May 1902, pp. 5-6, Al-Hakam, vol. 6, no. 19, dated 24 May 1902, pp. 5-7, Malfuzat-4, page 247-248, 250, 251, 261)(Al-Hakam, vol. 6, no. 25, dated 17 July 1902, pp. 5-7, Malfuzat-4, page 266-270).

In 1904, (via Lecture Sialkot, see page 57, online English edition), MGA alleged that the plague was the Dabbatul Ard, i.e., the worm of the earth.

In 1906, (Via al-Badr, vol. 6, no. 3, p. 15, dated 17 January 1907, Malfuzat-9, pages 52-96), MGA alleged that the plague was the Dabbatul Ard, i.e., the worm of the earth.

In 1909, after MGA died, Nooruddin ordered the publishing of “Nuzul ul Masih”, in this book, MGA and Nooruddin wrote that the plague was in-fact the “Dābbat al-Arḍ” [Nuzulul-Masih, pp. 37–39, Ruhani Khaza’in, vol. 18, pp. 415–417](see also the 2009 online english edition of Tadhkirah).

In 1917, in Muhammad Ali’s (Lahori-Ahmadi) famous commentary of the Quran, he also called “Dābbat al-Arḍ” as famine, disease and also generally wicked people. Interestingly, the same phraseology of “Dābbat al-Arḍ” is also used in another verse of the Quran, 34:14 (34:16 in the Ahmadi Quran).

In 1988, in Malik Ghulam Farid’s (Qadiani-Ahmadi) famous 5-volume commentary of the Quran, he also calls them as germs and/or insects. All of this goes back to MGA and his comments on the plague. Factually, this verse tells Muslims that one of the signs of the Day of Judgement will the emergence of a “Beast from the Earth”, in arabic as “Dābbat al-Arḍ”. One more thing, MGA did comment on other portions of Chapter 27 (al-Naml, the ant), as he denied the miracles of the prophet Solomon.

An Address on 27 December 1901 After the Asr Prayer

A Worm of the Earth
These people have given way to their own views and opinions and as a result they
have sought to disfigure the actual commandments. Their example is the same as:………………………………………..

The term dabba-tul-ard (worm of the earth) actually refers to a termite which is devoid of all good; it devours wood, dust, etc. It is characterised by the nature to consume and desires to expunge all that is good. It possesses a fiery nature.

Now what this means is that the worms of the earth are the scholars of the age, who misrepresent the truth and make false allegations against Islam. For example, there are those who revere Jesus, peace be upon him, in a manner that is beyond reasonable bounds, and they attribute to him the attributes of God Almighty. They believe that Jesus as gives life, he is the healer, he is the knower of the unseen and unchangeable, etc. Moreover, these people raise the false allegation against Islam that it was spread with the sword. A certain Mulla Bashir from Bhopal has called me the Antichrist, even though these people are themselves the greatest of antichrists, because they conceal the truth and dishonour Islam. Therefore, the staff of Islam, which stood for the grandeur and awe of Islam, and which brought with it peace and security, has been reduced to the ground by this worm of the earth. Therefore, like the worm of the earth or dabba-tul-ard 1 at that time, there are worms of the earth at present also, but only worse. The previous one only caused disorder in the land, but these ones have caused disorder…………………………………….

One meaning of dabba-tul-ard (worm of the earth) is also the plague, as is evident from the following
verse of the Holy Quran:
وََاِِذََا وََقََعََ الْْقََوْْلُُ عََلََیْْھِِمْْ اََخْْرََجْْنََا لََھُُمْْ دََآبََّۃًً مِِّنََ الْْاََرْْضِِ تُُكََلِِّمُُھُُمْْ اََنََّ انَّلاَسََ كََانُُوْْا بِِاٰٰیٰٰتِِنََا لََا یُُوْْقِِنُُوْْنََ*
Meaning, when the argument is clinched against the people, we shall bring forth for them a germ out
of the earth, which shall bite them because they did not believe in the signs of God Almighty. The
Arabic tukallimu-hum is clearly defined in Aqrab-ul-Mawarid as ‘biting.’ (Editor)

Then, the Holy Quran had informed of another Sign, that the plague will spread widely in this age. This prophecy was also in the ahadith. It was written in the Glorious Quran,

At another place it was clearly mentioned that it would be an
earthly insect ( دََدآََّّبةُُةاْْ لْاََلْارْْرضِِض ) [dabbatul-ard]. In the latter days a large number of people would die from it. Now, someone ought to tell me if there is any doubt or misgiving remaining regarding its fulfilment?

Taklim means ‘biting’. That [biting flea] is killing people. Everyday clouds form, and the season of spring continues in which the plague is fiercest. Death has increased significantly this year. I just want God to be recognized and obeyed somehow, irrespective of how many die. Of what concern is that? If the deniers of God and the insolent remain alive, then there is no point of benefit in this. Keep in mind that God Almighty will not relent until His terrifying manifestation compels the acknowledgement of His existence”””.

A tradition attributed to Ibn al-Zubayr also describes the Beast carrying the Seal of Solomon and Moses’ staff.[3]

Some ahadith say that the Beast will be one of the first signs of the Last Day, along with the sun rising in the west. The appearance of the Dajjal, rising smoke, massacres, and widespread death are said to be other signs of the end times in a similar hadith.[4]

5-volume commentary by Malik Ghulam Farid
https://alislam.org/quran/app/27:83

2866.

Important Words:

وقع (is passed). They say وقع الشیء من یدہ , the thing fell from his hand. وقع الحق means, the truth became established (Lane & Aqrab).

قول is inf. n. from قال and means, decree, sentence or the prophecy about punishment. واقع الطیر علی الشجر means, the bird descended upon the tree. The expression وقع القول علیھم means, the sentence or the decree became due against them; they made themselves deserving of the sentence or the decree (Lane & Aqrab).

دابة (insect) is active participle from دب which means, he or it crept or crawled slowly like an ant or a reptile or a weak person. دابة signifies all such animals or insects as creep or crawl or walk slowly, all animals big or small, whether walking on two legs or on four legs or creeping on the belly, etc. The word is also used about beasts like the horse, the mule, the donkey, etc. (Lane & Aqrab). In the Quran the expression دابة الارض has also been used for a worldly-minded man whose efforts are wholly devoted to the acquisition of material benefits; a grossly materialistic person, a worthless creature or worm of the earth (34:15).

تکلمھم (shall wound them) is aorist from کلم (kallama). کلمه means, he talked to him or he conversed with him much and freely; he wounded him (Aqrab).

Commentary:

The verse seems to imply two prophetic references. Taking دابة الارض in the sense of a grossly materialistic person whose endeavours are wholly directed to the acquisition of worldly riches and material comforts, the reference seems to be to the materialistic western nations “whose labour is all lost in search after things pertaining to the life of this world” (18:105) and who have fallen on this world with all their might and main. The verse purports to say that when men will reject the signs of God and by indulging in evil deeds will make themselves deserving of Divine punishment, they will fall a victim to the plunder and pillage of the materialistic and mechanistic western nations. Taking the word in the sense of “a worm or insect of the earth,” the reference may be to the bubonic plague which was to have appeared in the time of the Promised Messiah and from whose ravages his followers were to remain miraculously immune, thus bearing witness to the truth of his claims.

The Beast Of The Earth (Dabbat Al-Arḍ) In Islam (2026)

The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Arḍ) in Islam (2026)

The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Arḍ) in Islam (2026)

The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Arḍ) in Islam – Meaning, Quran, Hadith, and End Times Signs

The Beast of the Earth, known in Arabic as Dabbat al-Arḍ, is one of the major signs of Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. It is described as a unique creature that will appear before the end of times to distinguish between true believers and disbelievers. In Islamic eschatology, Dabbat al-Arḍ (also written as Dabbatul Arz) plays a significant role as part of Allah’s divine plan.

What is the Dabbat al-Ard in Islam?

The term Dabbat al Arḍ literally means “The Beast of the Earth.” In Islam, it is not considered a myth but a real creation of Allah that will emerge during the Last Days. Scholars explain that it is not an ordinary animal but a miraculous being, sent as a clear sign of the approach of Qiyamah.

Some people ask: Is Dabbat al-Ard evil? According to Islamic teachings, it is not “evil” in the sense of Shaytan or Dajjal. Rather, it is a creature created by Allah with a divine purpose – to mark people and show the truth.

Dabbat al-Ard in the Quran

The Quran directly mentions Dabbat al-Arḍ in Surah An-Naml (27:82):

“And when the word is fulfilled against them, We shall bring forth for them a beast from the earth who will speak to them because mankind did not have certainty in Our verses.”

(Quran 27:82)

This verse confirms that the Beast of the Earth is real and that its coming is one of Allah’s promised signs before the Day of Judgment.

Dabbat al-Ard Hadith

Several authentic Hadith also mention the appearance of Dabbat al-Arḍ:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The first of the signs (of the Hour) to appear will be the rising of the sun from the west and the appearance of the Beast before the people in the forenoon. Whichever of the two comes first, the other will follow shortly after.”

(Sahih Muslim)

From the Hadith, we learn what Dabbat al-Ard will do:

  • It will emerge and speak to people.
  • It will mark believers and disbelievers so that their faith becomes clear.

Dabbat al-Ard Appearance – What Does It Look Like?

Many Muslims ask about the dabbat al-ard appearance or even search for Dabbat al-ard photo. The truth is:

  • The Quran and authentic Hadith do not give a detailed description of its physical form.
  • Scholars mention different views: some say it will be a huge beast unlike any animal we know, while others believe it may have a symbolic appearance combining features of known creatures.

Therefore, no real picture of Dabbat al-Ard exists, and any images circulating online are artistic representations, not authentic.

What Will Dabbat al-Ard Do?

People often ask: What will Dabbatul Arz do?

According to Islamic texts:

  • It will speak to humanity, proving the truth of Allah’s message.
  • It will mark the faces of believers with a shining mark and disbelievers with a dark mark, making faith or disbelief clear to everyone.
  • It will appear after other major signs of Qiyamah begin, such as the sun rising from the west.

This answers the common question: Which animal is Dabba? – It is not a normal animal but a special creature created for this purpose.

Has Dabbat al-Ard Been Found?

Many wonder: Did scientists find Dabbah? Or is Dabbat al-Ard found already?

The answer is no. Dabbat al-Ard has not been found, nor has it appeared yet. It will only emerge when Allah’s decree comes to pass, near the very end of time. Scientists cannot discover it early, as it is part of the unseen (ghayb) known only to Allah.

When Will Dabbat al-Ard Appear?

Dabbat al-Ard will appear after the major signs of Qiyamah start unfolding. According to Hadith:

  • Its appearance is closely linked to the rising of the sun from the west.
  • It will emerge suddenly, surprising people.
  • Once it comes, repentance will no longer be accepted, as the test of faith will be over.

Is Dabbat al-Ard Mentioned in Other Religions?

Some compare the Beast of the Earth in Islam with the Beast in the Bible’s Book of Revelation. While there are similarities in symbolism, the Islamic perspective is unique: Dabbat al-Arḍ is not Satanic but a creature of Allah sent for a divine purpose.

Lessons from the Story of Dabbat al-Ard

  • Belief in the unseen (ghayb) is part of faith.
  • We should not wait for the appearance of Dabbat al-Ard to change; instead, we must strengthen our faith now.
  • It reminds us of the certainty of the Day of Judgment and the need for righteous deeds.

The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Arḍ) is a powerful reminder of Allah’s promise about the End Times. While many wonder about the dabbat al-ard appearance, whether Dabbat al-ard is evil, or if scientists found Dabbah, the reality is that it remains part of the unseen. What matters is preparing for the Day of Judgment by strengthening our faith, performing good deeds, and seeking forgiveness.
