Intro
This book is in English in 2024, via a mis-translation by the Qadiani-Ahmadi’s.

The full name of the book series is “ARBA‘IN” (LI ITMAMIL-HUJJATI ‘ALAL-MUKHALIFIN), in English as “The Forty” (Divine Arguments Against All Opponents). MGA had promised to write 40 booklets, however, he stopped at 4. Just like what they did with Braheen e Ahmadiyya and the promise of 50 volumes, as it was shrunk to 5. This 4-part booklet series was published on Dec-15-1900, in Urdu at the Diya’ul-Islam Press, Qadian. However, Part-1 was published on 7-23-1900.  MGA seems to be eager to fulfill a prophecy about Eisa (As) bringing 40 of something. MGA issued an Urdu leaflet (Arba‘in No. 1) on July 23rd, 1900. The Parcharak newspaper of Jullundur criticized the Urdu leaflet Arba‘in No. 1 to which the AI-Hakam replied on September 16th, 1900. It should also be noted that during the writing of this book, per Mirza Basheer-uddin Mahmud Ahmad, MGA was in transition from non-prophet to prophet, in fact, in this book, MGA clearly calls himself a prophet of God for the first time ever (discreetly).

It should be noted that in the very first edition of Arba’in (1900), MGA and his team of writers wrote that “Anbiya” (prophets) had said that the Mahdi would come in the 14th century and near the Punjab, however, in the 2nd edition (1920), they wrote a footnote wherein it was stated that this was a clerical error and the word should have been “auliya” (see page 39 on the online English edition). The second edition of Arba’in was published on 12-18-1920. Scan in the below. Since 1984, and the invention of Ruhani Khuzain, Arba’in was placed into Ruhani Khaza’in, volume 17, as the 3rd book. In 1984, when Ruhani Khuzain was created, the footnote was totally removed. Manzur Ahmad Chinioti explains this situation in this video. We have placed the clip by Manzoor Ahmad Chinioti on tik tok, see herein. Read our essay on MGA claiming that the Messiah would come in the 14th century. Zia Rasul from the Aaqa Ka Ghulam youtube channel explains the entire story herein, see at the 3:30 mark). Maulawi Muhammad Husain Batalavi is mentioned in this book 10+ times. Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah is mentioned 4 times in this book.

Book review by AFCB

In Arba‘in-1 (published on 7-23-1900), MGA calls himself the Hakam and Adl (see page 6). Arba‘in-1 is barely 6 pages.

Arba‘in-2 was published on Sep-27-1900. It should also be noted that during the writing of this book, per Mirza Basheer-uddin Mahmud Ahmad, MGA was in transition from non-prophet to prophet, in fact, in this book, MGA clearly calls himself a prophet of God for the first time ever (discreetly)(see page 12). MGA mentions Maulawi Muhammad Husain Batalavi and he initially supported MGA (1880’s). MGA calls himself as “Siraj-e-Munir” (the Shining Lamp), however, this was a title given to Muhammad (Saw) via 33:46 of the Quran. MGA alleges that the name Isa (As) was given to him (page 19) and MGA will also heal the sick. MGA called himself as “Khatamul-Muslehin” (the Final reformer)(page 20). MGA alleges that Musa (As) and Eisa (as) had worldly teachers (page 21-22). MGA says that he is the Mahdi and Messiah (pages 23-34). MGA says that Muhammad (Saw) is the only perfect Mahdi (page 25). MGA quotes 53:3, 53:4, 53:5 (53:4, 53:5 and 53:6 in the Qadiani Quran) and alleges that he has the Holy Spirit (Ruhul-Qudus) with him and other angels (page 26). MGA posts his often-repeated wahi: You are to Me like My Tauhid [Oneness] and My Tafrid [Uniqueness](page 29). MGA alleges that his ancestors owned land = 100 miles (page 30)(this is a lie). MGA claims to be Persian via wahi and alleges that some of his paternal grandmothers were from the righteous and noble descent of Sadat [Holy Prophet’s descendants from his daughter Hadrat Fatimah](page 31). MGA calls his prophethood as metaphorical only (page 32). MGA quotes 3:55 of the Quran (3:56 in the Qadiani Quran)(page 34). MGA posts wahi/ilham wherein his God tells him that he will be victorious (page 35). MGA alleges that his God named him Eisa (As)(page 36). MGA possesses the status of the prophets (page 37). MGA is equal to the prophets (page 37). You people do not seem to have the time to peruse my great voluminous books, but if you were to look even at my booklets Tohfa-e-Golarhviyyah and Tohfa-e-Ghaznaviyyah, you will come to know what the Quran says about the Messiah. These were written for the guidance of Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah and members of the Ghaznavi Jama‘at—Maulawi ‘Abdul Jabbar, ‘Abdul Wahid, ‘Abdul Haqq, and others (page 38). MGA is the judge for Quran and Hadith authenticity (page 40). MGA denies the physicality of the Mir’aj (page 42). MGA quotes 5:117 (5:118 in the Qadiani Quran) and 3:144 (3:145 in the Qadiani Quran)(page 43). MGA alleges that Eisa (as) lived up til age 120 (page 44). MGA alleges that camels have been abandoned (page 45). MGA offers a Mubahala (page 46). MGA says it’s not a Mubahila (page 48). MGA mentions the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and alleges that many Muslims turned apostate (page 50). The people of Yunus (as) got a reprieve (page 50). Pages 51 to 66 are MGA’s recent revelations, MGA’s age prophecy and many other things.

Arba‘in-3 and 4 and the announcements and etc., were published on Dec-15-1900 and an Appendix on Dec-29-1900 (the originals are missing). It starts off with a 500-rupee challenge by MGA to Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf, Canal Revenue Collector, and similarly addressed to over 20 Muslim ulema. MGA is mad at Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf for saying that MGA’s silly 23-year rule for prophets was wrong. There was some meeting wherein Hafiza sahib stated this, in fact, many Ahmadi’s were there like Mirza Khuda Bakhsh—companion of Nawwab Muhammad ‘Ali Khan; Miyan Mairaj-ud-Din Lahori; Mufti Muhammad Sadiq; Sufi Muhammad ‘Ali, Clerk; Miyan Chittu Lahori; Khalifah Rajab Din the Merchant, Lahori; Sheikh Yaqub ‘Ali, Editor of the newspaper al-Hakam; Hakim Muhammad Husain Qureshi; Hakim Muhammad Husain, the Merchant of the Ointment of ‘Isa; Miyan Charagh Din Clerk and Maulawi Yar Muhammad. MGA alleges that Maulawi Rahmatullah (aka Rahmatullah Kairanawi) and the late Maulawi Syed Al-e-Hasan had presented 69:44 and the 23-year rule to the Reverend Pfander (3 times) in their books “Izala-e-Auham” (see pages 71 and 72) and “Istifsar” (1850’s). MGA mentioned Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf (17 times). MGA mentioned Maulawi Abdullah Ghaznavi and his pupil, Abdul Haqq Ghaznavi roughly 20 times. MGA mentioned his famous ring (see page 76). MGA mentions that his age will reach 80, the Age Prophecy (see page 78). MGA mentioned Maulawi Ghulam Dastagir Kasuri 12 times (see page 78). MGA mentions Maulavi Muhammad Isma‘il, who has asked MGA to give a speech in Aligarh in 1889, wherein MGA agreed, then backed out at the last minute. MGA alleges that Muhy-ud-Din of Lakhukay, Maulavi Muhammad Isma‘il, Maulawi Ghulam Dastagir, Reverend Hamidullah Peshawari and Lekh Ram all said that MGA would die, however, they all died before MGA (page 79). MGA mentioned Lekh Ram 10 times in this book (starts on page 79). MGA complains about Batalvi opposing him (page 80). MGA gives a list of his opponents and alleges that they will die soon, Muhammad Husain
Batalavi, Maulawi ‘Abdul-Jabbar Ghaznavi also Amritsari, ‘Abdul Haqq Ghaznavi also Amritsari, Maulawi Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Golarhvi, Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Nazir Husain Dehlavi, Rusul Baba Amritsari, Munshi Ilahi Bakhsh Accountant, and Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf Revenue Collector Canals, and others (page 81). MGA alleges that Maulawi Ghulam Dastagir died for opposing MGA (page 82). MGA alleges to have been given the sign of the eclipses and that camels will be abandoned (page 84). MGA and his team claimed that the “Dhus-Sinin” star was a sign for his arrival (page 85). MGA alleges that it was also in the ahadith that the plague would spread, and travel to the Hajj would be obstructed during the time of the Messiah (page 85). MGA says Nevertheless, stepping out onto the battlefield is not the work of the effeminate (mohannus)(page 86). MGA says what is man but a mere insect? and what is a mortal but a mere lump of flesh! (page 87). God has informed me already that the wordings and the meanings of all the ahadith which they present are either tampered with or they are definitely fabricated (page 88).
MGA alleges that those prophecies written in the Holy Quran and the ahadith be fulfilled which
stated that when the Promised Messiah would appear, he would suffer torment at the hands of the Islamic scholars, and they would declare him to be a kafir [disbeliever] and they would issue fatwas to have him killed, and they would dreadfully insult him (page 91). However, MGA didn’t give any reference, Ahmadi editors added the reference of Tirmidhi (Hadith 2641), but the hadith doesn’t match. The beginning of the fourteenth century was destined for the Promised Messiah (page 92). MGA says that it is a statement of kufr to believe that false claimants of prophethood can live 23 years (page 93). MGA argues that the 23-year rule (69:44 of the Quran) is for Rasul, Nabi and Mursal (translated as appointee) only, not common people who lie all the time (94). MGA mentioned Maulawi Abdullah Ghaznavi roughly 20 times in this book and alleged that he saw a light descending upon Qadian. However, he was dead by 1881.

“”Today, in order to satisfy all seekers of knowledge, I invite all my opponents, non-believers that I propose to publish forty flyers. So on the day of Judgment, I can present to God Almighty that I have fulfilled my mandate. So now, with all due respect and humility, I address all Muslim clergy, Christian clergy, Hindu clergy and Pundits and Aryans to whom I send this flyer and inform them that I have been sent to this world in order to uplift morality, and reform beliefs and remove weaknesses of faith. My step is in the footstep of Jesus, peace be upon him, and it is why I am called the Promised Messiah. And I have been commanded that I spread the word of God and of
truth by manifesting heavenly signs and teaching piety. I am against raising the sword for the purpose of spread of religion and to cause bloodshed in the name of religion. I am a Prophet of God and I try to remove all mistakes and weaknesses.””

Footnote-22
“””After this flyer I will issue a flyer every fortnight provided I do not face any hurdle till I complete the number forty, or any one of my opponents without exuding any filthy air that is perceptible to anyone, comes in the field, and like me show a sign, but I must remind here that this is not intended to be any Mubahalah (Prayer Duel) with anyone or asking any prophecy in respect of anyone. This competition is about the person at whose hand God almighty reveal hidden affairs, manifest sign and accept the prayers, these should be completely be detached from any interest personal or otherwise. Refrain from any prophecy that is intended to disturb common peace or against the Government or related to humiliation or death of anyone.””” (Arba‘in, p. 1 footnote, Ruhani Khaza’in, v. 17, p. 343 footnote)(also see Hidden Treasures).

“””””I am called the Promised Messiah. I am commanded to spread the truth in the world only through pure teachings and extraordinary signs. I am against the use of the sword for the sake of religion. I am commissioned to remove, as much as I can, all wrong notions from
among the Muslims and to invite them to the ways of pure morals, forbearance, meekness, fairness and truthfulness. I declare unto all Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Aryas that I have no enemy in the world. I love mankind as does a mother, even more than that. I am an enemy only to such false beliefs which destroy the truth. Sympathy for man is my duty and hatred of falsehood, idol worship, transgression and every kind of wickedness, injustice and evil behaviour is my principle. The real reason for the effulgence of my sympathy is the fact that I have discovered a mine of gold and Jewels and it is a good fortune that I have found in this mine, a priceless diamond full of lustre. The price of that diamond is so great that if I were to distribute it amongst all my brethren of mankind each one of them would become richer than the one who possesses in the world today notwithstanding the greatest quantity of gold and silver.

What is that diamond? The True God. To get to Him is to recognize Him, to have a true faith in Him, to seek Him it would be the height of injustice that after possessing so much wealth I should keep mankind deprived of it, that I should enjoy it while they should starve. It is absolutely impossible for me to do so. My soul is sore vexed when I see their poverty and starvation and my heart sinks when I find them in darkness. I want to fill them with heavenly
wealth, and I wish them to get as many jewels of truth as humanly possible….

It has been made clear to me that among Divine messengers, he, whose teaching is perfect, holy and full of wisdom to the utmost degree, is our Chief, Muhammad Mustafasa.”””

Arba‘in No. 1, Ruhani Khaza’in, vol. 17, pp. 343-346, See Essence of Islam, vol. 4

“”””Today, for the purpose of conveying the message in a conclusive manner, I have made up my mind to publish forty announcements inviting those who oppose and deny me, so that on the Day of Judgement I should be able to plead before God, the One, that I had fulfilled the purpose for which I had been sent. So, with full respect and humility, I send this announcement to Muslim and Christian divines, and to Hindus and Arya Pundits, informing them that I have been sent to the world for the reformation of moral, doctrinal and spiritual weaknesses and errors. I follow in the footsteps of Jesusas, and, in this sense, I am called the Promised Messiah. I have been commanded to spread the truth in the world through miraculous signs and holy teachings. I am opposed to the use of the sword in support of the faith and the slaying of God’s creatures in the name of religion. I have been appointed that, so far as it may be possible for me, I should remove all these errors from the minds of the Muslims and should call them to pure morals, perseverance, meekness, justice and righteousness. I proclaim to all the Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and Aryas, that I have no enemy in the world. I love human beings with the love that a compassionate mother has for her children and even more so. I am the enemy only of the false doctrines which slay the truth. Human sympathy is my duty, and discarding falsehood, idolatry, every type of misconduct and wrongdoing, injustice, and immorality, is my principle.

What has roused my sympathy is that I have discovered a gold mine and have been informed of a deposit of precious stones. In this mine I have been fortunate enough to find a shining and priceless diamond. Its value is so great that if I were to divide its price among the whole of mankind, each of them would become wealthier than the person who owns the largest amount of gold and silver in the world. What is that diamond? It is the True God, and to acquire Him means to recognize Him, to believe in Him truly, to establish the relationship of true love with Him, and to receive true blessings from Him. Having found such great wealth, it would be a great wrong that I should deprive mankind of it and that they should die of hunger while I live in luxury. This I will not do. My heart burns at the contemplation of their poverty and hunger. My soul is in travail at the perception of their darkness and privation. I desire that their houses should be filled with heavenly wealth and that they should acquire so many jewels of truth and certainty that they should be filled to their capacity.

Of course everyone loves his own species. Even the ants love their own kind, unless they happen to be overcome by some selfish desire. Therefore, he who calls people to God Almighty has an obligation to love them the most. And I love mankind the most. I have no personal enmity with anyone; I am the enemy only of their misconduct and of the wrongs they commit and of their disobedience and rebellion. Out of my eager love for mankind, I offer them the treasure that I have received, which is the key to all the treasures and bounties of Paradise. The fact that the treasures that have been bestowed upon me comprise of real diamonds, gold and silver can be easily ascertained. All these coins and jewels bear the royal mark, that is to say, I have heavenly testimonies which no one else has. I have been told that of all the faiths, Islam is the only true faith; and that of all guidance, the guidance contained in the Qur’an alone is true in every respect and is free from human interpolation. I have been made to understand that of all the Messengersas, the one who has brought the most perfect holy and wise teaching and who practically demonstrated human excellences at the highest level is our lord and master Muhammad, the Chosen Onesa. I have been informed through pure and sacred revelation vouchsafed to me by God Almighty that I am the Promised Messiah and the Promised Mahdi sent by Him, and that I am the Hakam [Arbiter] of the internal and external differences. The Holy Prophetsa has honoured me by bestowing upon me the names of Messiah and Mahdi. God has also called me by the same names in His direct word. What is more, the condition of the world in the present age also demanded that these should be my names. These are thus the three witnesses to these names of mine. I call to witness my God, Who is the Master of heaven and earth, that I am from Him and He bears witness to me through His signs. If anyone can compete with me in the matter of heavenly signs, then I am false. If anyone can prove himself my equal in the matter of the acceptance of prayers, then I am false. If anyone can prove himself my equal in expounding the verities and the fine points of the Holy Qur’an, then I am false. If anyone can prove my equal in disclosing that which is hidden and foretelling, with the mighty Power of God, the mysteries before their time, then I am not from Him.

Where now are the Christian ministers who have said that, God forbid, no prophecy or miraculous matter was disclosed by our lord and the lord of mankind, Muhammad, the Chosen Onesa? I say truly that he alone is the perfect man whose prophecies and acceptance of prayers and display of other miraculous matters is something which even now rages like the ocean through his true followers. Which other religion beside Islam possesses this quality and this power? Where are the people, and in which country do they dwell, who can compete with Islam in the matter of Divine blessings and signs? A person who follows a religion which does not partake of the heavenly spirit, wastes his faith. That religion alone is worth the name which is alive and possesses the spirit of life and leads one to the Living God. I claim not only that the hidden is disclosed to me through the holy revelation vouchsafed to me by God Almighty and that miraculous signs are shown to me, but I also say that whoever follows me with a pure heart and with true love for God and His Prophetsa, will also receive this bounty from God Almighty. But remember that this door is closed upon all opponents; otherwise let someone from them compete with me in the matter of heavenly signs. I affirm that no one will be able to do so. This is a living proof of the truth of Islam and the truth of my claim….
Peace be upon him who follows the guidance.

“””I announce in the name of Him in whose hand lies my life, that if you people clear your minds and wish to see another Divine sign, then the All-Powerful God, without being subject to your demand, has the power to manifest a sign out of His own will and authority. I am certain that if you repent sincerely, and demand a sign from me and promise God that if some extraordinary sign, which is beyond human power, is manifested, you will discard all ill-will and rancour, and, seeking only the pleasure of God, will make the pledge of allegiance to me, surely God Almighty will manifest some sign, for He is Merciful and Beneficent. But I do not have the choice to appoint two or three days for the manifestation of a sign or to follow your desires. It is at the choice of God Almighty to appoint whatever date pleases Him….

For the adoption of this method it will be necessary that at least forty leading Maulavis like Maulavi Muhammad Hussain Sahib of Batala, Maulavi Nadhir Hussain Sahib of Delhi, Maulavi ‘Abdul Jabbar Sahib of Ghazni, now of Amritsar, Maulavi Rashid Ahmad Sahib of Ghangoha, and Maulavi Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib of Golrah should publish an agreement in a newspaper attested by fifty respectable Muslims that if a sign, which is truly extraordinary, is manifested, they will give up their opposition out of the fear of God the Glorious, and will make the pledge of allegiance to me.

Should this method be unacceptable…there is another simpler and easier method….It is that, purely out of fear of God Almighty and out of mercy for the Muslims, you should call a meeting in Batala, Amritsar or Lahore. This meeting should be attended, as far as may be possible, by
a large number of respected divines and men of the world. I shall also attend with a number of my followers. Then all of them should supplicate thus:

Lord, if You know that this person is an impostor and is not from You, and is neither the Promised Messiah nor the Mahdi, then may You remove this cause of dissension from among the Muslims and safeguard Islam and the Muslims against his mischief, as You did safeguard the Muslims against the mischief of Musailama Kadhdhab and Aswad ‘Ansi by removing them from the world, but if he is from You and our minds and intellects are at fault, then may You Powerful One bestow understanding upon us so that we may not be ruined, and make manifest such matters and signs in his support that we should be satisfied that he is from You.

When this supplication is made, my followers and I will say Amin aloud. After that, I shall pray, holding in my hand all those revelations that I have set out….I will pray as follows:

Lord, if these revelations, which are mentioned in this pamphlet that I hold in my hand, and on the basis of which I consider myself the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, and hold Jesusas to be dead, are not Your words, and if, in Your estimation, I am a liar and impostor and dajjal who is the cause of dissension among the Muslims, and if I am under Your wrath, I supplicate You earnestly that within one year from this date You cross out my name from among the living and ruin all my enterprises and wipe out my every sign from the earth. But if I am from You and these revelations which I hold in my hand are from You and I am a recipient of Your grace, then O Mighty Benefactor, cause my Jama‘at to grow in an extraordinary manner in the coming year and bestow extraordinary blessings upon us, and bless my life and send down Your heavenly support.

When this supplication is finished, all opponents should say Amin. It would be proper that everyone should come to this meeting for the purpose of prayer with pure and serene hearts and not in a spirit of victory or defeat. This prayer should not be considered a Mubahalah [prayerduel]
because its benefit or harm is limited to me alone….The prayer should be offered with concentration and great earnestness. Sincere prayer finds acceptance with God. If all my enterprise is not in the cause of God and is an imposture and a show, the prayers of representative Muslims will soon be heard. But if my Movement is heavenly and has been initiated by God Himself, my supplication will be accepted. O you men of honour! Respond to this request of mine. There is no need for a large gathering, it would be enough if forty representative divines were to take part in the prayer. But they should not be less than forty, for this number has a blessed connection with the acceptance of prayer.”””

“”””It was for me that God caused the solar and lunar eclipses in heaven during the month of Ramadan, and caused numerous other signs to be manifested on earth, and thus, in accordance with Divine practice, my truth was conclusively established. God, in Whose hand rests my life, is my witness that if you cleanse your hearts and seek other signs from God, the Omnipotent One is capable of showing a sign according to His own will and power, without being subject to
any of your importunities. And I am sure that if you demand a sign from me, with a genuine desire to repent, and promise earnestly before God that if an extraordinary sign appears which is beyond human power, you will shed all this rancour and enmity and, purely for the sake of winning God’s pleasure, will enter into the pledge of Bai‘at with me, then God, being so Kind and Merciful, will certainly show you some sign. However, it is not within my power to fix a period of two or three days for showing a sign, or to do exactly as you wish. It is the prerogative of God to choose the time.”””

“”””In Lahore, Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf Sahib, Dila‘dar of Canals, under the false doctrines of ignorant and misguided clerics, … has stated confidently that if anyone falsely claims to be a Prophet or a Messenger or a commissioned one by God, and thus seeks to mislead people,
he can survive such imposture for twenty-three years and even more. What he means to say is that the survival of such an impostor for more than twenty-three years cannot be a proof of his truth. He also stated that he can cite the names of many people who made such false claims and continued to assert for more than twenty-three years that they were recipients of God’s word….

Through this announcement, I demand from Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf Sahib to cite such an instance as promised in his signed document. I know for certain that this principle, which is set out in the Holy Qur’an by God Himself, can never be contravened….

It is for this reason that I have made this public announcement together with an offer of five hundred rupees as an award for the citation of a single instance to the contrary, and I am prepared to deposit this amount in any government bank in advance. If Hafiz Muhammad Yusuf Sahib and those who think like him, whose names I have mentioned in this announcement, will cite an instance with adequate proof in accordance with the Holy Qur’an, in which a person who falsely claimed to be a Prophet or a Messenger or a commissioned one of God, continued to publish his alleged revelations for more than twenty-three years, I shall pay such a person the sum of five hundred rupees in cash. They will be at liberty to cite such an instance from anywhere in the world within a fortnight of the publication of this announcement.”””

An Open Challenge
“”I swear by His Countenance for I see Him now. The world does not recognise me but He who has sent me does indeed know me. It is a grave mistake and misfortune of these people that they wish for my destruction. I am the tree which the True Master has planted with His own hands. Anyone who wants to cut me off seeks to share the ill fate of Creosus, Judas Iscariot and Abu
Jah’l. I pray tearfully every day that someone may come forward in the arena and seek a decisive outcome with me according to the precepts of prophethood, and then see for himself, who God supports. But it is not for a coward to step into the arena; Ghulam Dastagir, who hailed from our territory of the state of Punjab was a soldier of the disbelieving army who perished in this
quest. But now it is impossible that anyone even like him comes forward from among the ranks of these people. O ye people, understand for sure that there is a Hand in my support that will remain loyal to me till the very end of time. Even if your men and your women, your young and your old, your big and your small all come together and pray for my destruction to the extent that due to ceaseless prostrations your noses rot and your hands become crippled, even then God will most certainly not listen to your prayers and will not stop till He fully completes His work. And if even one from among the people is not with me, God’s angels will be with me. And if you hide the testimony of my truth, it is near that rocks shall stand witness to my truth. Thus, do not wrong your own souls; the face of an imposter is quite distinguishable from the face of a truthful man. God does not abandon any issue unresolved.”””

“”””I have received the book of Munshi Ilahi Bakhsh, accountant, entitled: ‘Asa‘-e-Musa, in which he has made personal attacks—based entirely on ill-thinking—on me and has also attacked some of my true and holy prophecies without due consideration. When I had looked through that
book and had put it aside, I received the revelation concerning Munshi Ilahi Bakhsh:

Translation: [Arabic] They desire to see menstruation blood in you. [That is, they are
seeking to discover impurity and filth and vileness] but God desires to exhibit His continuous favours unto you.(See also Al-Hakam, volume 4, number 44, December 10, 1900).

How can they find in me any matter resembling menstruation and what trace of it is left in me, for God has converted, through holy changes, that matter into a handsome boy; and that handsome boy has the status of a son in the estimation of Allah, meaning that although the limbs of a child are nourished and developed through menstruation blood, the child cannot be called impure like
menstruation. God has affirmed that I had developed from the state of impurity which is part of human nature into purity and that it is folly on the part of my opponents to seek impurity in me because I have become a pure child by the hand of Allah and like a son in His estimation.
God is my Guardian and Providence. There is, thus, the resemblance of a paternal relationship. God has put down the fire which has been sought to be kindled through this book ‘Asa-e-Musa. God is with the righteous who carry out their duty to the utmost and mind the finer points of taqwa [fear of God].

“”””Translation: [Arabic] Glad tidings for you, My Ahmad. You are My purpose and are with Me.
I have planted for you My tree with My own hand. Your secret is My secret and you have a
good standing in My presence. I have chosen you for Myself.

You are to Me like My Unity and My Uniqueness, so the time has arrived when you
should be helped and be known among the people. O Ahmad, grace—that is verities and
points of wisdom—flow from your lips. You have been blessed, O Ahmad, and the blessing
that Allah has bestowed upon you was deserved by you.

The Gracious One has taught you the Qur’an—that is, informed you the meanings of
the Qur’an that people had forgotten—so that you might warn a people whose ancestors
passed away unheeded and so that the guilty ones might be faced with a conclusive argument
from God. Tell them: I am not saying this on my own, but on the basis of revelation from
God and I am the foremost of the believers in this age. Tell them: If you love Allah, then come
and follow me, so that Allah may also love you. These people will plan and Allah will also plan
and Allah is the Best of planners.

Allah is not such as to leave you till He has distinguished between the pure and the impure.
My mercy covers you in the world and the hereafter. This day you are in a position of
honour with Us. You are of those who are helped. You have a standing with Me of which
the people have no knowledge. We have sent you in order to show mercy for the universe. O
Ahmad, enter Paradise along with your zauj. O Adam, enter Paradise along with your zauj.

This [zauj] means that everyone who associates with me, whether it is my wife or friend, will achieve salvation and will experience a heavenly life and will ultimately enter Paradise….

This station is by the Mercy of Allah, so that it may be a Sign for people. I determined to
establish a vicegerent on the earth and so I created this Adam. This Adam will establish
the law and revive the faith.

This is a Messenger of Allah in the mantles of the Prophets—with good standing in the world
and in the hereafter and one of those who have attained nearness to Allah.

I was a hidden treasure and I liked to be known. We shall make this servant of Ours a Sign for the people and a mercy from Us and this was a matter determined since eternity.

O ‘Isa [Jesus], I shall cause you to die a natural death, that is your opponents will not
succeed in killing you, and shall raise you towards Me, that is will establish with clear
arguments and manifest Signs that you are near to Me, and shall purify you from the
charges of the disbelievers and shall place those from among the Muslims who follow you above your opponents till the Day of Judgment. A company of your followers will be from among the first and a company from among the last. They seek to frighten you of their mischief, but Allah will safeguard you Himself from the mischief of the enemies even if the people do not safeguard you and your Lord is Powerful.

Allah praises you from His Throne—that is, in contrast to the abuses of the people, Allah
praises you. We praise you and send down blessings on you. We shall suffice you against
those who mock you. They say: ‘This is a lie which he has fabricated; we have heard
nothing like it from our ancestors.’ These ignorant ones do not realize that it is not hard
for Allah to grant this station to someone. We have honoured some people above others. This
status has been granted by the mercy of your Lord so that it should be a Sign for people. But
these people have rejected the Signs of God unjustly and arrogantly while their hearts
accept them.

Tell them: I have with me a special testimony from Allah; do you believe it not? Tell them
again: I have with me a special testimony from Allah; do you submit or not. When they see a
Sign, they say: ‘This is just an ordinary thing; it has happened so since eternity.’ [And if they
see a Sign, they turn away and say, ‘A passing feat of magic.’] …Allah has decreed since
eternity: I and My messengers will surely prevail—meaning that no matter how severe
the opposition, people raised by God would never be vanquished. Allah is Supreme over
His decree, but most people know it not. He it is Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He might make it supreme over all religions. There is no
changing the words of Allah. Those who have believed and have not adulterated their faith
with any injustice are the ones who will be secure from every calamity and they are rightly
guided.

Do not supplicate Me in the matter of those who have committed wrong; they are a people
drowned. They treat you with mockery and say: ‘Is this the one whom Allah has raised
up?’ They look at you but do not see you. Keep in mind when the one who will declare you a
disbeliever will plan against you… and will call upon his elder Haman to light the fire of
persecution saying: ‘Initiate the edict of apostasy yourself because people have greater regard for you and you can incite them all with your edict. Therefore you be the first to put a stamp of approval, so that all ulema might be excited, and follow your stamp with their stamps. So that I should discover whether God is with this man or not though I consider him a liar.’ (Then he put the stamp.) Ruined is Abu Lahab and so are the two hands (one with which he held the edict and the other with which he put the stamp or wrote the edict). It did not behove him to intervene in this matter but in fear. Whatever pain will afflict you, it will be from Allah.

There will be a great trial after Haman puts a stamp on the edict of apostasy, then be steadfast as were steadfast the Prophets of high resolve…. This trial is from Allah, so that He might love you with a great love. It is an everlasting love that will never be cut off. Your recompense is with Allah. Your Lord will be pleased with you and will perfect your name. There are many things that you like for yourselves but they are not good for you. And there are many things that you desire not, but they are good for you. Allah knows and you know not.””””

“””Meaning that [Arabic] All praise is due to Allah, who has made you Masih ibn-e-Maryam
[Messiah, son of Mary]. You are the revered Messiah whose time shall not be wasted. A
pearl like you is not wasted.

And then said:

Meaning that [Arabic] We shall bestow upon you a pleasant and comfortable life, eighty
years or thereabouts—meaning, a few years less or a few years more. You will witness
distant progeny. Manifestation of the True and the High, as if Allah had descended from
heaven.

Then I received the revelation:

Meaning that [Arabic] The moon of the Prophets will come and your affair will be
achieved. You are not the one who would let go of Satan before you overcome him. It is your lot to be victorious and the defeat is destined for your enemies.

And then [Allah the Almighty] said:

Translation: [Arabic] I shall humiliate him who designs to humiliate you and will help him who helps you. Allah will not leave you till He has distinguished the pure from the impure. Holy is
Allah; you are His dignity, so how should He leave you. I am Allah, then devote yourself
wholly to Me and affirm: Lord I prefer you to everything.

And then the revelation came:

Meaning that [Arabic] The enemy will say: ‘You are not from God’. We shall seize him
from his snout, that is, will close all his avenues with conclusive arguments, and shall exact
retribution from the wrongdoers on the Day of Judgment. I shall come to you suddenly with
My hosts, that is, you do not have the knowledge of the hour when you will be helped. The day will come when the wrongdoer will bite his hands in remorse and will say: ‘Fie on me; I wish I had not opposed this Messenger of God and had stayed with him.’ They say: ‘This Jama‘at will soon disperse and their affair will be frustrated;’ whereas they have not been granted the knowledge of the unseen. We have sent you as an argument and Allah has all power to send an argument at its needed time.

Then the revelation came:

Translation: [Arabic] We sent Ahmad to his people, but people said: ‘He is a great liar.’ They started bearing false witness against him and fell upon him like the waters of a flood. He
said: My Friend is near but hidden.

My help will come to you. I am the Gracious One. You possess the capability and will receive plentiful rain. I shall send to you the groups from every people in large numbers. I have illumined your house. This is a revelation from Allah, the Mighty, the Merciful. If someone asks: ‘How would we know that this is revelation from God’, the evidence for them is that this revelation is accompanied by many Signs. Allah will never furnish the disbelievers with a cause to make a real charge against the believers.

You are the city of knowledge, pure and accepted of the Gracious One. You are My
High Name. Glad tidings for you in these days. You are from Me, O Ibrahim [Abraham]. You
are established on His attributes. You are the manifestation of the Ever-Living One. You are
the beginning of the desired affair from Me. You are from Our water and they are from cowardice.

Do they say: ‘We are a host able to take retribution. All of them will flee and they will turn their backs.’ All praise is due to Allah who has provided you with good relations through marriage and a good descent. Warn your people and tell them: I am a plain Warner from Allah. We have produced for you many harvests, O Ibrahim [Abraham]. They say: ‘We shall destroy you;’ but God said to His servant: There is nothing to fear; surely I and My Messengers shall prevail. I shall come to you soon with My hosts. I shall roll like the waves of the ocean. Allah’s grace is coming and there is no one who can obstruct it. Tell them: By my Lord! This is the truth which will not be changed nor will remain hidden, and that will come down which will surprise you. This is revelation from the Lord, Maker of the high heavens. There is no God but He, He knows
and sees everything. Allah is with those who fear Him and perform virtuous acts nicely and
carry out good deeds beautifully. For them will the gates of heaven be opened and for them
there will be glad tidings in this life. You are being reared in the side of the Prophet and [you
dwell on the tops of mountains]{{The words in brackets were not translated by the Promised
Messiahas and are given by the Publishers. [Publishers]}}} I am with you in all circumstances.

And then the revelation continued:

Translation: [Arabic] They say: ‘This is imposture and this man is ruining the faith.’ Say: The truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Say: Had this matter not been from Allah you would have found great contradiction in it, that is, you would not have found any supporting evidence for it from the Word of God.… God is He Who has sent His Messenger (that is my humble self) with guidance and the religion of truth and the reform of morals.

Tell them: If I have fabricated it, I shall bear the guilt of it, that is, I would perish. Who can
be guilty of greater wrong than one who fabricates lies against Allah? This is revelation
from Allah, the Mighty and the Merciful, so that you might warn a people whose ancestors
have not been warned and that you might invite other people to the acceptance of truth. It may
be that Allah will soon bring about friendship between you and those who are at enmity with
you and your Lord has power to do whatever He wills. They will fall down prostrate on their
faces, supplicating: ‘Lord, forgive us, we were in error.’ No blame will lie on you this day.
Allah will forgive you and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. I am Allah,
then worship Me, [and do not forget Me] and keep striving to reach Me and keep supplicating your Lord and be diligent in supplication. Allah is a Friend and is Compassionate. He has taught the Qur’an; then what hadith will you follow instead of the Qur’an? We have sent down mercy upon this servant. He speaks not on his own; whatever you are hearing is revelation from God.

He approached God, that is ascended and then, leaned towards the people to convey the message of truth so that it became a case of one chord between two bows—God above and the creation below. Leave Me alone to deal with those who give you the lie. I shall stand with My Messenger. My day will be a day of great judgment. You are on the straight path. We may show you some of that which We have promised in their case or We may cause you to die and fulfill the promises afterwards. I shall raise you towards Me, that is your ascension towards God will be well established in the world and My help will come to you. I am the Lord, Whose Signs overpower the hearts and take them into their grip.

[Arabic] [A title of honour for you].

[Urdu]There will be a great Sign with it….

God has determined to exalt your name and to illumine it greatly in the universe. I shall exhibit My flash and shall exalt you as a demonstration of My power. Many thrones have descended from heaven, but your throne has been set at the highest level. Angels helped you at the time of your meeting with your enemies. The British dealt kindly with you. God was on the side on which you were. Those who look to heaven suffer no grief whatsoever. This is not a good way. ‘Abdul-Karim, the leader of the Muslims, should be told not to pursue it.

“”””The meaning of the sentence ‘feet of the followers of Muhammad have been firmly established on a high tower’ is that the Promised Messiah of the latter days, about whom all the prophets had prophesized, was born amongst the Muslims—even though the Jews and the Christians thought that he would be born amongst them. Hence the high tower of respect was given to the followers of Muhammad. The word [of Muhammad] has been used here to signify that those looking at only the apparent power and majesty of Islam – of which the word Muhammad is a manifestation—will now receive abundant Signs from the heavens. This is a requisite for the manifestation of Ahmad since the name Ahmadsa demands not only humility and submissiveness but also self-effacement of the highest degree—which is an essential requirement for expressing as well as deserving the true state of praise, devotion and deep love. The Signs of support go hand in hand with this true state of praise and love.””””

“””The Holy Qur’an repeatedly proclaims that God Almighty does not spare one who fabricates a lie against Allah. He punishes such a one in this very life and destroys him; Allah the Exalted refers to it in the verse:

{{{Ta Ha, 20: 62 [Publisher] That is, he who fabricates a lie shall perish.}}}

At another place it is said:

{{{Al-An‘am, 6:22 [Publisher] Who is guilty of greater wrong than one who fabricates a
lie against God or gives the lie to His signs?

It is thus clear that those who gave the lie to the word of God on the occasion of the advent of God’s Prophets were not spared by God and were destroyed by diverse types of torments. Observe what was the end of the people of Noah and of ‘Ad and Thamud and the people
of Lot and of Pharaoh and the Meccan enemies of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him).

Thus when those who rejected the truth were chastised in this world, how can he escape who fabricates a lie against Allah and who is mentioned in the first place in the verse just cited. Would God treat the righteous and the false alike and is there no punishment in this life from
God Almighty for impostors?

{{{{‘What is the matter with you? How judge ye!’—Al-Qalam, 68:37 [Publisher]}}}}

At another place God Almighty has said:

{{{Al-Mu’min, 40:29 [Publisher] If this Prophet is an impostor, he will perish because of
his imposture, but if he is truthful, then it is a must that you too will taste some punishment, because the transgressors, whether they are guilty of imposture or rejection, shall receive no help from Allah.

What could be more explicit than the fact that in the Holy Qur’an God Almighty warns again and again that an impostor is bound to perish in this very world.””””

MGA says that his God has sent him as the Promised Messiah and has informed him what hadith are true and which ones are false.

Qadiani official translation (page 159, online English edition of Arba‘in):

“””Did I invite him to have a debate on religious tenets with him and then do his bai‘at? When I have already declared repeatedly that God has sent me as the Promised Messiah and has informed me which particular hadith is authentic and which hadith is not, and He has bestowed on me the correct understanding of the Holy Quran, then why should I engage with these people in a debate on religious tenets, when I have the same firm faith in wahi [revelations] that I have received as I have in the Torah, the Gospel and the Holy Quran? Do they expect me to discard my faith which is based on knowledge by the certainty of experience, and that I should accept their conjectures and collection of false narrations?”””

“””Purely by way of advice, and for the sake of Allah, I tell the opposing clerics and their soul mates, that abuse and vilification is not the way of decency. If this be your disposition, then so be it. But if you consider me false in my claim, you also have the option to come together in your mosques and pray to God for my ruin, or you can do the same individually. If I am false in my claim, your prayers are bound to be heard. Indeed, you have been praying against me already. But remember, even if you continue to pray thus until your tongues are bruised, and you go on bewailing in your prostrations until your noses are rubbed out, and your tears wipe out your eyelashes, and the weeping reduces your vision, and your brains are so affected that you begin to suffer from epilepsy or melancholia, still your prayers will not be heard; for I have
come from God, and anyone who curses me will himself be afflicted with such a curse, though he may not be aware of it. He who enters into a prayer duel with me and supplicates that the one among us who is false may die in the lifetime of the other, will come to the same end
which overtook Ghulam Dastgir of Qasur….

No one can die on earth unless his death is decreed in heaven. My soul is inspired with the same truth with which the soul of Abrahamas was inspired. I have a relationship with God like that of Abrahamas. My secret is known to God alone. My opponents ruin themselves in vain. I am not the plant that can be uprooted by their hands. If their predecessors and their successors, and their living and their dead, were all to come together and pray for my ruin, my God would convert their prayers into curses and would fling them back upon them. Do you not see that hundreds of wise people from among you continue to join my Jama‘at? There is uproar in heaven and God’s angels are pulling pure hearts in our direction. Can man obstruct this Movement that is proceeding in heaven? Try to obstruct it if you think you have the strength. Use all the cunning and deceit that the opponents of the Prophets employed against them in the past, and leave nothing untried. Use your utmost strength. Call down ruin till you arrive at the door of death. Then see what harm you can bring upon us. Heavenly signs are descending like rain, but the unfortunate ones continue to raise objections from afar. What remedy can we provide to the hearts which have been sealed.
Lord have mercy on this Ummah, Amin.

“”””The readers of this announcement will be aware that, having observed the persistent condemnation and vilification of opposing clerics and custodians of shrines, and having noted their demand for a sign, I had made an announcement that was addressed especially to Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib. The sum and substance of that announcement was that there have so far been many discussions on religious issues from which the opposing Maulavis have derived no benefit, but as they continue to ask for heavenly signs, it is possible that they might derive some benefit from them. It was published because Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib, who claims excellence of sainthood, as well as a high intellectual calibre and, on account of his confidence in his learning, has recently renewed his condemnation of me as a disbeliever, and has published a book in order to provoke the common people against me…. And since God Almighty has honoured me with the revelation:

‘The Almighty Allah has taught thee the Holy Qur’an’;

I had, therefore, suggested that it would be enough of a sign for testing my truth or falsehood if Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib and I both were to write a commentary in clear and eloquent Arabic on some Chapters of the Holy Qur’an. If he is judged better than me, I shall have no hesitation in acknowledging his superiority. With this in view, my announcement was made entirely in good faith … but he has completely evaded my challenge.…

Today, God Almighty has put a plan in my mind which I set forth to conclusively resolve this matter, and I believe that it will fully expose Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib, for the whole world is not blind; there are some who are fair and just. The plan is that today I give the following answer to the constant barrage of announcements, which are being published in favour of Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib. If Pir Mehr ‘Ali Shah Sahib is truly exceptional in his knowledge of the Qur’an and Arabic literature, and is well versed in the arts of persuasion and eloquence, I believe he must still be in possession of those qualities since it is not long since he moved to Lahore. I propose here and now to establish the truth by writing a commentary on Surah Al-Fatihah and setting down the verities and truths of this chapter of the Holy Qur’an. As for Hadrat Pir Sahib, he should also base his evidence regarding the Promised Messiah and the bloodthirsty Mahdi on Surah Al- Fatihah. He is at liberty to deduce his conclusive arguments
and crucial verities from Surah Al-Fatihah, written in eloquent and brilliant Arabic. The two books should be printed and published within seventy days beginning from the fifteenth of December, 1900. This will allow knowledgeable people to compare and decide for themselves.
If three scholars, who possess literary qualities and are proficient in Arabic and have no connection with either of us, state on oath that Pir Sahib’s book is superior to mine, both in composition and in setting forth the verities of the Holy Qur’an, I shall immediately pay five
hundred rupees to Pir Sahib…. He will be at liberty to seek help in this enterprise from Maulavi Muhammad Hussain of Batala, Maulavi ‘Abdul Jabbar of Ghazni and Muhammad Hassan of Bhin. He is even free to employ three or four Arab scholars who posses literary qualifications for this purpose. These commentaries should not be less than four juz each…. If any of us fails to publish such a commentary within the appointed term—between 15 December 1900 and 25 February 1901—he will be considered false in his claim, and no further proof of his falsehood will be necessary. Peace be upon those who follow the guidance.

Arba‘in and fierce opposition to the Promised Messiah: A glimpse into the Indian press of 1900

Ata-ul-Haye Nasir, Ahmadiyya Archive & Research Centre
Arbain 3

The later part of the 19th century was an era that saw a rising tide of opposition to Islam. In particular, the Christian and Arya clergymen, supported by their press, were running a malicious campaign against Islam. They were objecting to the teachings of the Holy Quran and attempting to malign the blessed character of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa. At that juncture, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas of Qadian undertook to defend Islam, prove the magnificence of the Holy Quran and highlight the blessed character of the Holy Prophetsa.

This article endeavours to focus on the Indian press of the year 1900 and the Promised Messiah’sas series of tracts, titled “Arba‘in (Li Ittmamil-Hujjati ‘Alal-Mukhalifin)”, commencing in July 1900.

Arba‘in’s English translation has recently been published and was made available for the first time on this year’s Jalsa Salana UK. It was mentioned by Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa in his second-day address at the Jalsa Salana UK 2024.

Arbain English

The year 1900 was a very significant one. In addition to the publication of Arba‘in, the Promised Messiahas announced the construction of Minarat-ul-Masih, issued the edict regarding Jihad, and challenged many opponents, such as the Bishop of Lahore and Pir Mehr Ali Shah of Golra.

Unfortunately, while the opponents of Islam were making all possible efforts to tarnish Islam, the Muslim clerics were also leaving no stone unturned in opposing the Promised Messiahas. However, this great champion of Islam bravely stood on this battlefield to defend Islam.

Announcement about Arba‘in

On 23 July 1900, the Promised Messiahas wrote an ishtihar – published in Al Hakam on 9 August 1900, exactly 124 years ago – and announced that he intended to publish 40 tracts to conclusively communicate the truth to the opponents (itmam al-hujjah), particularly the Muslim clerics, Christian missionaries and the Arya Samajists. This first tract was titled “Arba‘in Number 1”. Huzooras announced that after this tract, each tract would be published fortnightly, provided there was no hindrance of any kind, until the 40 tracts were completed or until an opponent came into the field with a pure intention and manifested any sign similar to Hazrat Ahmadas.

Arbain 1

In this first tract, the Promised Messiahas addressed the opposing clergymen and reiterated his claim of being a ma‘mur (God’s appointee) and stated that the objective behind his advent is to uplift morality, reform beliefs and remove weaknesses of faith. He said that he has been commanded by God Almighty to spread the Truth by manifesting heavenly signs and righteous teaching. (Al Hakam, 9 August 1900, p. 4)

Opposition from the press

While Huzooras was inviting all clergymen to seek the truth and while he was proving the truthfulness of Islam, we find that it was a time when not only the opponent clergy, but the press too was leaving no stone unturned in opposing the Promised Messiahas. If we glance at the opponent press in the year 1900 alone, we find a huge storm of opposition against one single person — the God’s Appointee and the Saviour of mankind in the Latter Days. The prominent among the Muslim press was The Paisa Akhbar of Lahore and Sat Dharam Pracharak among the Arya press, while the Nur-i-Afshan of Ludhiana was leading the Christian rhetoric.

Inflammatory articles by Nur-i-Afshan before Arba‘in

It was a practice of the Christian newspaper, Nur-i-Afhsan of Ludhiana, to publish harsh and abusive articles against the Promised Messiahas, and the year 1900 was also no exception.

Around three months prior to Hazrat Ahmad’sas above-mentioned ishtihar, the Nur-i-Afshan published an article by a person named J.K., titled “Yasu ke Masih honay mein mukhalif ki mukhalifat” — The opponent’s opposition to Jesus being the Messiah, in which it was falsely asserted that among the Muslims, the Promised Messiahas was the biggest opponent of Jesusas. Addressing the Promised Messiahas, he wrote:

“You have staunchly opposed Jesus; it is incumbent upon you to believe Jesus the Messiah to be God, and accept him in order to attain a [spiritual] life.” (Nur-i-Afshan, 6 April 1900, p. 4)

The author of the article continued by using a harsh tone and wrote that in the past, the deniers of Jesus have received a strong response from the Christians and punishment from God as well. (Ibid.)

The fact is that the Promised Messiahas, in accordance with the Quranic teaching, considered Jesusas to be a prophet of Allah. He did not oppose him; however, he certainly opposed the false belief of the Christians and contemporary Muslims about Jesusas being alive in heaven. He announced after receiving divine revelation that Jesusas had passed away and would never return to the world. Moreover, as per the divine revelation, he claimed to be the Promised Messiah and Mahdi.

For more details on this, see  “Hazrat Ahmad’s claim to be the Promised Messiah and opposition from the religious clergy and press”, at alhakam.org (19 April 2024).

In the same issue, another article was published titled “Masihi Mazhab Hind mein aur uska aainda tasallut” – Christianity in India and its future rule – by some H. Golaknath of Phillaur, in which he wrote that “a new Muhammadiyyat has appeared, which has commenced through Mirza Ghulam Ahmad”. (Nur-i-Afshan, 6 April 1900, p. 5)

The author then mentioned the Promised Messiah’sas prophecies in relation to the plague and used inappropriate and abusive language. (Ibid.)

The same newspaper published an article by Abul Fazl on 20 April 1900, in which he used inappropriate comments about the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa and the Promised Messiahas as well. He asserted that the Muslims were unable to prove any of the miracles manifested by the Holy Prophetsa and attempted to give a false impression that the Promised Messiahas could also not prove his miracles. (Nur-i-Afshan, 20 April 1900, pp. 5-6)

In the same issue, another article by Ramanand Anwar asserted that the Promised Messiahas wrote lengthy articles in relation to the miracle of the splitting of the moon but could not prove the Prophet Muhammad’ssa miracles. (Ibid., p. 6)

The truth is that the arguments and proofs that were presented by the Promised Messiahas in his writings, particularly Surma-e-Chashm-e-Arya in 1886, were so powerful and solid that no Arya had any courage to refute those, despite being challenged in the said book.

For more details, see “Anti-Islam rhetoric before and after Surma-e-Chashm-e-Arya: A glimpse into the Indian press”, at alhakam.org (5 May 2024).

Akhbar 1900

Another point which must be noted by the opponents of the Promised Messiahas is that all these abuses and harsh comments towards him were only due to the fact that he was seen as the biggest defender of Islam and all opponents of Islam were putting every possible effort to down him, but they were helpless and thus, forced to use such inappropriate and vile language in desperation.

Minarat-ul-Masih: Comments of Akhbar-i-’Am and Koh-i-Nur

On 28 May 1900, the Promised Messiahas published an ishtihar, expressing his intention of constructing a minaret called “Minarat-ul-Masih” in the courtyard of the Aqsa Mosque in Qadian, as a physical and literal fulfilment of the Holy Prophet’ssa prophecy about the white minaret. He mentioned its details and the importance of fulfilling this prophecy and called the attention of Ahmadis towards contributing to a fund for the construction of this minaret. (Majmu‘ah-e-Ishtiharat [2019], Vol. 3, pp. 49-62)

Upon this, Akhbar-i-‘Am and Koh-i-Nur of Lahore published articles on 5 and 24 July 1900, respectively. These articles incorporated particular perspectives pertaining to the Promised Messiahas or his claims, which seemingly stemmed from the authors’ individual comprehension or convictions.

The Indian Newspaper Reports mentioned the article by Akhbar-i-‘Am, and stated its details under the heading “The Mirza’s tower” (Indian Newspaper Reports, c1868-1942, Vol. 13, No. 29, p. 354). This article also mentioned the Promised Messiah’sas edict about the prohibition of Jihad with the sword, issued on 7 June 1900, titled “Deeni Jihad ki mumani‘at ka Fatwa Masih-e-Maud ki taraf se” – The edict of the prohibition of religious Jihad from the Promised Messiah. (Majmu‘ah-e-Ishtiharat [2019], Vol. 3, pp. 63-66)

Since the Koh-i-Nur of Lahore, dated 24 July 1900, had also commented on Minarat-ul-Masih, the Indian Newspaper Reports mentioned it under the heading “The Mirza and his followers”. (Indian Newspaper Reports, c1868-1942, Vol. 13, No. 33, pp. 417-418)

1900 Newspapers

‘Miracle of Christianity’?

It is important to mention here that on 27 July 1900, the Nur-i-Afshan published an unnamed article in which it mentioned that the editor of an American Christian newspaper had come to India upon seeing the prevailing problems in India with an aim to personally assess the situation. The author wrote that the American Christian had sacrificed his own comfort and facilities available to him in his home country and accepted to face all kinds of hardships here in India, just for the betterment of mankind. It was stated that he did not come just because of Christianity, but rather, it was nothing else than human sympathy and love. He continued:

“The Hindus and Muslims ought to ponder over this miracle of Christianity. It is my desire that Mirza Qadiani — who is very proud of the power of his pen and often demands miracles from the Christians — shall look at this miraculous act of Christians, and remain silent until he manifests Messianic attributes, just like the Christians.” (Nur-i-Afshan, 27 July 1900, p. 7)

The fact is that by that time, Allah the Almighty had already manifested hundreds of signs at the hands of Hazrat Ahmadas, which served as a great proof of the existence of Allah, blessings of the Holy Prophetsa and Islam’s superiority over all other religions. However, strangely, these “seekers of signs” pretended as if they had not seen any sign from this champion of Islam.

This first tract was published in Al Hakam on 9 August 1900. This issue of Al Hakam and the Promised Messiah’sas tract was mentioned in the Indian Newspaper Reports, under the heading “The prophet of Kadian”:

INR 1900

“The Al Hakam (Kadian), of the 9th August 1900, publishes the first of a series of forty manifestoes in which Mirza Ghulam Ahmad[as] of Kadian states that his object in publishing these manifestoes is to fulfil his divine mission so that he may not be called to account on the day of judgment for not performing the task with which he has been charged by the Almighty. He, therefore, informs the learned men of Islam and Christianity, as well as Pandits, Hindus and Aryas, that he has been commissioned to remove moral weaknesses and mistaken beliefs; that he will walk in the footsteps of Christ; and that it is for that reason that he is called the Promised Messiah. He has been directed to reveal and spread the Truth by means of miracles and holy teachings. He is opposed to the drawing of the sword and the shedding of blood for the sake of religion and has been commissioned to remove all such misapprehensions prevailing among the Muhammadans and call them to the path of morality, toleration, justice and righteousness. He bears enmity to no one; on the contrary, he loves everybody more tenderly than a mother loves her child. He is opposed only to false beliefs that are at variance with the Truth. It is his duty to sympathise with mankind and to express disgust at falsehood, polytheism, tyranny, &c., &c. The Mirza[as] then goes on to state that Islam is the only true and perfect religion, that the Koran [sic., Quran] is the only book that contains the best teaching and that Muhammad[sa] was the only man who lived an ideal life. The Mirza[as] calls himself the Promised Messiah and Mehdi, because, in the first place, the Prophet[sa] himself called him by that name and, in the next, because the Almighty, in direct communion with the Mirza[as], addressed him by those titles. Moreover, the moral requirements of the age demand that he should be called by such a name. The Mirza[as] claims the power of working miracles and asserts that his prayers are granted by God and that he knows things that are to happen in the future. If the world can produce another man who can equal him in any of these things, then the Mirza[as] is a most consummate liar. The Mirza[as] ridicules the assertion of Christian Missionaries that Muhammad[sa] never performed a miracle or made a prophecy and remarks that he was the only Prophet whose prayers were granted and whose prophecies were fulfilled. Nor is this all. Such things have been and are still being performed by the followers of Islam. Can the followers of other religions hold their own against the followers of Islam in this respect? A true religion leads its followers to a living God and those who firmly believe in Islam and follow the Mirza[as] shall acquire this inestimable boon.” (Indian Newspaper Reports, c1868-1942, Part 8, Vol. 13, No. 34, pp. 434-435)

Nur-i-Afshan’s response to Arba‘in Number 1

The Nur-i-Afshan of Ludhiana, dated 3 August 1900, criticised this tract published by the Promised Messiahas and used inappropriate language, and wrote under the heading “Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani”:

“Mirza Sahib has a great desire that the Muslims and Christians somehow accept him as the Promised Messiah. For this, he has initiated a new series of tracts, the first one of which has already been published.” (Nur-i-Afshan, 3 August 1900, p. 11)

Nur-i-Afshan further wrote that “in response to these manifestoes by Mirza Sahib, we only suffice to say that these manifestoes might induce the Muslims to acknowledge you as the Mahdi,” but the Christians would not give any importance and that the “Christians are very well aware of your life and know that your life is completely contrary to the nature of Jesus.” (Ibid.)

The Indian Newspaper Reports, under the heading “The Prophet of Kadian”, stated that Nur-i-Afshan “remarks that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Kadian has again taken to publishing manifestoes in the hope of persuading the Christians and the Muhammadans to acknowledge him to be the promised Messiah.” (Indian Newspaper Reports, c1868-1942, Part 8, Vol. 13, No. 34, p. 418)

Nur-i-Afshan’s response to Promised Messiah’s defence of Quran

One thing which stands out is that the Promised Messiahas was seen by the opponents of Islam as a major proponent of Islam and the Holy Quran, and thus, they were making all possible attempts to refute his arguments in favour of Islam. They left no stone unturned in their efforts, though resulting in utter failure, to veil the magnificence of the Holy Quran that was being highlighted by the Promised Messiahas in his writings and discourses.

For instance, on 31 August 1900, the Nur-i-Afshan of Ludhiana, published an article by H Golaknath, in which he wrote:

Nur Afshan 1900

“Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani presents the fundamentals of the faith — meaning the kalima لا الہ الا اللّٰہ [there is none worthy of worship except Allah] and the kalima الحمد للّٰہ [All praise belongs to Allah] — to be a major proof of the completion of faith. Hence, he strongly propagates and teaches this superiority of the Quran, even to the extent that this very superiority of the Quran is mentioned by his [followers] too in some places. In addition, another proof which he had presented while commenting on اکملت لکم [Surah al-Maidah, Ch.5: V.4] during the debate with late Deputy Abdullah Athim Sahib in Amritsar, was that in accordance with the Quran, the criterion for the perfection of a Revealed Book is based on three points.

“‘Meaning that the basic principles of faith of that Book must be solid and proven,’ that is, they are proven and ‘the nature of man accepts them,’ it is then that ‘Allah strengthens the believers with the Word that is firmly established—that is to say, a word that is proven and well argued—both in the present life and in the Hereafter. [The Holy War (Jang-e-Muqaddas), pp. 61-62].’

“As far as the meaning of a firmly established Word is concerned, it has been explained in his further statement. Those three signs are: Firstly, لا الہ الا اللہ, whose proof he presents from the second Surah [of the Holy Quran] al-Baqarah [2:165], that is, Allah ‘has argued within this verse in favour of this principle of faith of His, from His law of nature,’ meaning that the system of the universe is a sufficient proof of Allah’s Tawhid [Oneness], etc. [The Holy War (Jang-e-Muqaddas), p. 63]

“The second [sign] is الحمد للہ [All praise belongs to Allah], that is authenticated from the manifestations of nature [sahifa-e-qudrat], which mankind could witness upon pondering over the heavens. He states:

“‘Now, look how Allah, the Lord of Glory, has argued within this verse in favour of this principle of faith of His, from His law of nature’, and ‘by looking at which, in clear accord with the intent of this noble verse, it becomes very clearly evident that, without a doubt, there is an Eternal Creator of this world.’ [Ibid.]

“The third sign is ‘meeting with Allah, the Lord of Glory, together with all its accompaniments by way of heavenly blessings and Divine converse.’ [Ibid., pp. 64-65]

“Who would be the recipients of these blessings? He states, ‘Those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and then they adopted steadfastness’ … and God became their Protector and Guardian in this life and the Hereafter as well. [Surah Ha Mim as-Sajdah, Ch. 41: V. 31-32]. [Ibid., p. 65]” (Nur-i-Afshan, 31 August 1900, p. 3)

The author then attempts to refute the above-mentioned arguments, and before proceeding to his arguments, states:

“I will shortly narrate about the principles or the principles of faith which are often mentioned by Mirza Ji and then comment on اکملت لکم in light of the Sacred Scriptures.” (Ibid., p. 4)

The fact is that despite all their efforts, for instance, these articles in Nur-i-Afshan, they were unable to refute the majestic arguments presented by the Promised Messiahas in his writings and discourse.

The Paisa Akhbar’s one-sided articles

In 1900, The Paisa Akhbar of Lahore was publishing one-sided articles and using inappropriate language in relation to the Promised Messiahas, particularly when reporting about his challenge to Pir Mehr Ali Shah of Golra in its issues of 1 and 8 September 1900.

Moreover, on 29 December 1900, it published a review of Munshi Ilahi Bakhsh of Lahore’s book Asa-e-Musa whichhe wrote against the Promised Messiahas, and mentioned that this book was written in response to the Promised Messiah’s book Zuroorat-ul-Imam (The Need for Imam). The article’s tone was very harsh and one-sided.

In relation to that book of Ilahi Bakhsh, the Promised Messiahas had stated:

“I received the book of Munshi Ilahi Bakhsh Accountant, Asa-e-Musa, in which he has made personal attacks on me, merely based on suspicion and against some of God’s true and sacred foretellings with utter haste.” (Majmu‘ah-e-Ishtiharat [2019], Vol. 3, p. 155 [footnote])

Sat Dharam Pracharak’s articleand response by Akhbar-i-‘Am and Al Hakam

An Arya newspaper, Sat Dharam Pracharak, in its 14 September 1900 issue, published an article in response to the Arba‘in and criticised it in very abusive and harsh language.

The Indian Newspaper Reports, mentioned an article by Akhbar-i-‘Am, under the heading “The Aryas and the Mirza of Qadian”, which criticised Sat Dharam Pracharak’s article:

AA 1900

“The Akhbar-i-‘Am (Lahore), of the 25th September 1900, publishes a communication in which the writer endeavours to refute the comments made by the Sat Dharam Pracharak on the manifesto issued by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad[as] of Kadian and advises the Aryas to ask the latter to work some miracle instead of challenging him to repeat the Vedas. Even if the Mirza accepted the challenge, no good would accrue, inasmuch as the repetition of that book would in no way tend to the reformation of the world. What benefit has the founder of the Arya Samaj conferred on the world by means of the Vedas beyond preaching the doctrine of Nayog and misinterpreting passages relating to idol-worship, and why should the Aryas ask the Mirza to repeat the text of the Vedas? The writer is not at all surprised at the language used against the Mirza by the Aryas, seeing that their leader denounced a good man like Nanak[rh] to be an impostor, &c., and thereby injured the religious feelings of thousands of Sikhs.” (Indian Newspaper Reports, c1868-1942, Part 8, Vol. 13, No. 41, pp. 546)

Al Hakam, in its 16 September 1900 issue, wrote a detailed article in response to the article by Sat Dharam Pracharak. The Indian Newspaper Reports included a summary of this Al Hakam article as well. (Ibid., p. 547)

Arba‘in Number 2 and Arba‘in Number 3

Arba‘in Number 2 was published on 27 September 1900. In the beginning, Huzooras stated that the jealousy, glory and honour of God Almighty demanded that He once again manifest Himself to mankind. Hence, God Almighty has appointed him at the beginning of the 14th century for the revival of Faith and for propagating the true understanding (ma‘rifat), and that with the support and grace of Allah, heavenly signs are being manifested on his hand. The Promised Messiahas swore in the name of the Gracious and Mighty God that he is from Him and has come at the appointed time with His Will. Huzooras declared that Allah the Almighty is with him at every step he takes and He will not cause him any failure, nor will He destroy his Jamaat until He fulfils all of His plan that He has intended. (Arba‘in Number 2, p. 2; Ruhani Khazain Vol. 17, p. 348)

It is important to mention here that in this tract, the Promised Messiahas mentioned various revelations he received from God Almighty, including the following revelation that was received in 1865:

ثمانين حولا او قريبا من ذالک او تزيد عليہ سنينا

“Your age will be 80 years, a few years less or some years more.” (Arba‘in Number 2, p. 31; Ruhani Khazain Vol. 17, p. 380)

This revelation was also mentioned in Arba‘in Number 3. (Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 17, p. 419)

Arba‘in Number 4

The Promised Messiahas wrote the fourth tract, titled “Arba‘in Number 4”. Towards the end, Huzooras stated under the heading “Ittilaa” – announcement:

“I had expressed my plan to publish forty separate flyers of this treatise, Arba‘in. I had imagined that I would only print single-paged flyers, which could sometimes be one and a half pages long or, at the most, two pages long, and occasionally I would write three to four-page flyers. But it so happened that I ended up writing these flyers differently. [Arba‘in] Numbers 2, 3 and 4 turned out as small booklets. As a result, the book became almost seventy pages long; thus, my initial intent has been realized. I have, therefore, ended these treatises at Number 4 and no more will be published in the future. Just as our God, the Lord of Honour and Glory, had initially prescribed fifty daily Prayers but later reduced the number and established five a substitute to fifty, in the same way, following the tradition of our Benevolent Lord, I declare the number four a substitute for forty by way of reducing the burden on the readers and end this writing with a few words of advice to my Community.” (Arba‘in [English], p. 143)

Once Huzooras had finished writing the fourth tract, he published all of these four tracts in a book form on 15 December 1900.

Conclusion

The opponents of the Promised Messiahas often allege that he did not fulfil his promise of writing 40 tracts and just published four. However, the above-mentioned words of the Promised Messiahas are sufficient refutation to such notions. Since the purpose behind writing these tracts had been fulfilled with just four tracts, there was no need to continue this series.

As far as the opposition in the year 1900 is concerned, there was an unprecedented rise in the opponents’ efforts to halt the Promised Messiah’sas mission. However, divine help and succour was with him at all times, hence, he continued to succeed in his mission to prove the magnificence of Islam and the Holy Quran, and to highlight the blessed character of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa.
