Intro
Apparently, Lal Beg was the leader of the Balmiki‘s, after his death there seems to have been an issue at Qadian wherein they needed a new leader.

In MGA’s youth, he had mostly Hindu friends, like Lala Malawamal (see on TikTok and Twitter) and Lalah Sharampat. In the 1850’s and 1860’s, MGA’s best friend was a Hindu named Lala Bhim Sen. Even in Sialkot, they both sat for the law exam, MGA failed.

In 1891-1892, when MGA made his claim to be the Messiah, the Gurdaspur Gazzeteer (page 61)(download from here) alleged that MGA was previously the leader of the sweeper community at Qadian (in roughly the 1860’s and 1870’s)(Balmiki‘s). We have archived the Gurdaspur Gazzeteer of 1883-1884 too, however, there are NO references to the Mirza family or Qadian.

In roughly 1889-1890, MGA was accused of having Astrological equipment in his house at Qadian by a Maulawi of Aligarh—Muhammad Ismail (See Victory of Islam, page 68).

In 1892-1893, via A’ina-e-Kamalat-e-Islam (page 545), Mirza Ghulam Ahmad admitted to being a fortune teller in his youth and was taught by his own father, Mirza Ghulam Murtaza (the Sikh army commander).

In the mid-1890’s, MGA’s cousin-brother Mirza Imam ud Din wrote books vs. MGA (“Did-e-Haq” [Sighting of God], (See Malfuzat-3, page 209, online English edition, allegedly on July 16, 1901, See Al-Hakam, vol. 5, no. 21, dated 10 August 1901, pp. 14-15). Mirza Imam ud Din also wrote “The Story of Each of the Two Kafirs” (in this he declares MGA and Muhammad Husain Batalwi as kafirs) and Gul Shiguft, etc. (See Dard, page 708). In this book, Mirza Imam ud Din created an annual convention (Chuhra Mela), which MGA copied and made Jalsa Salana, which failed in MGA’s life.

In 1901, via their famous census, the British Government alleged that MGA used to have a special mission (1860’s) to the sweepers (Balmiki‘s)(Chuhray) at Qadian and was their leader.

However, by 1903, MGA and his team of writers called this an error and complained about it publicly (See the January 1903 edition and page 83 of February 1903 edition of the English ROR and Al Hakam February 28th-1903 pages 12 and 13)(See scans in the below).

In 1904, when Mirza Fazl Ahmad died, he seems to have buried in the Mirza family graveyard in Qadian, which seems to have lots of Balmiki people (conjecture). Mirza Imam ud Din and MGA’s first wife is also buried herein. MGA’s elder brother, Mirza Ghulam Qadir is also buried there. Maaee Sahib Jaan Sahib widow of Mirza Ghulam Haidar (and Mirza Ghulam Haidar), Mirza Gul Muhammad and his wife (Maaee ladlee bagum sahiba uraf maaee laado), Mirza Ghulam Mohy uddin, Murad Bibi (MGA’s sister), Janat bibi (MGA’s alleged twin sister), the Wife of Mirza Gul Muhammad, wife of Mirza Atta Muhammad sahib and Mirza Atta Muhammad date of death, 27 rabee ul awal 1280, 12 september 1862 (handwritten diary of khandaan Masih Maoud). MGA’s mother (Charagh Bibi) is buried there too.

In 1905, Dr. Griswold mentioned the controversy about Mirza Imam ud Din being the leader of the sweepers (Balmiki chooray). Griswold trusted Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in this regard and said that only Mirza Imam ud Din was the leader of the sweepers at Qadian. Griswold was unaware of the 1892 reference.

In 1923 (via Seeratul Mahdi, narration No. 49), the widow of MGA (Nusrat Jehan) alleged that she remembers hearing Mirza Imam ud Din comments from the mid-1880’s wherein he allegedly said that he wanted to open a peer business.

In 1947, Qadiani-Ahmadi Maulvi A.R. Dard, alleged that Mirza Imam ud Din became the leader of the sweepers at Qadian in 1886 (See Life of Ahmad, online edition, see page 172, footnote).

In 2025, a house in the Balmiki Mohalla of Qadian was demolished by the local police (See photo in the below)(Dated as May 4, 2025).

In July of 2025, this was discussed by Bro Imtiaz and Mufti Mubasher Shah (see 6:38:16). Mufti Mubasher explained how the British Government told the world in 1901 that MGA used to be the leader of the sweepers at Qadian (the Balmiki‘s).

In Aug-2025, the “Balmiki Chowk” foundation laid down in Qadian (See on TikTok and Twitter).

Quotes

The foreword, the author of which is not mentioned at the end, appears to be written by a Lal Begi, and reads:

—“Thousands of thanks to God, that as the religious teachings of our insightful pir Balmik Sahib were becoming distinct through the neglect of his people, he has ignited this lamp through a very pious person, Mirza Imam-ud-Din of Qadian, district Gurdaspur, who has rejuvenated the teachings of Balmik Sahib. […]” (Deed-e-Haq, p. 5)

—“O Lal Begis! Do not go towards any other religion and stick strictly on the path of Pir Balmik. […]” (Ibid., p. 7)

—“My desire is that you stay on your path and do not seek to follow any other religion. […]” (Ibid., p. 9)

—“There is no special god in mosques who is their friend and your enemy. You should build your own temple to remember god. […]”

—-Imam-ud-Din goes on to remind them of their prayers and gives advice on new ways of praying where everyone stands facing each other and says special mantras, which Imam-ud-Din spells out for them; before telling them that “you ought to take these instructions as god’s words […]” (Ibid., p. 18).

The India Census report of 1901 and the #Ahmadiyya Community – ahmadiyyafactcheckblog

Per the census of 1901, there were roughly 12,000 Ahmadi’s in all of British-India (see Griswold, 1912), out of the roughly 12,000 Ahmadi’s, 1,113 were Ahmadi’s in the Punjab, the United Provinces reported 931 Ahmadi’s and the Bombay presidency reported 10,000 Ahmadi’s (Griswold thought this number was exaggerated). Why would there be more Ahmadi’s in the Bombay area then in the Punjab? Thus, this number is inaccurate (see Walter, Chapter VI). The same numbers were discussed in 1903 in the English Review of Religions. (See page 83, February 1903 edition and see the January 1903 edition for extended notes on the census of 1901). It should be noted that its unclear how #Ahmadiyya was written on this form and thus, unknowing Muslims might have accidentally identified as #Ahmadis.

Interestingly, “The Punjab Census Report”, Part I, (Census of India, 1901, Volume XVII, Chapter III, paragraph 39, page 143, MGA is described as a Maulvi and as working with the sweepers (chooray) of Qadian (See English Review of Religions, February 1903). However, they seem to have confused MGA with his cousin, Imam ud Din, who was the leader of a hindu religion (the chooray, the sweepers) at Qadian.

In July of 2025, this was discussed by Bro Imtiaz and Mufti Mubasher Shah (see 6:38:16). Mufti Mubasher explained how the British Government told the world in 1901 that MGA used to be the leader of the sweepers at Qadian (the Balmiki’s).

The Al Hakam February 28th, 1903 pages 12 and 13 (pages 93 and 94 in the year 1903 pdf on AAIL linkarchive.org link). The article is title “Census in Punjab and dangerous error about the Ahmadiyya sect” (In Urdu:”Murdam Shumaari Punjab aur firqa Ahmadiyya ke mutaaliq khaternaak ghalti”).

The first 1.5 columns (of total 4 columns) are about a possible discrepancy in the number of Ahmadis reported in Punjab. The census reported 113, but the author insists there are several hundred more.

The Passage

[while ending some reasons why Ahmadis might have been undercounted in Punjab] It is possible that we could be blamed for this error when we say that we started advertising about it when the initial work of the census began. But we stand exonerated when we see that the respective department committed another dangerous and grave error due to common laziness. And this proves that even the department is solely responsible for the initial mistake as well.

And that error is mentioning in this [census report] that the founder of this sect Mirza Ghulam Ahmed Qadiani started preaching the Chuhra community [Scheduled caste: see Wikipedia entry] as a Maulvi. Even though every child in Punjab knows that His excellency Mirza Ghulam Ahmed sahab Qadiani AS never built any relation with them.

Officers of the census department got this mistake from Gurdaspur Gazzeteer 1891-1892, page 61 where this error was previously committed. And we remember clearly that when his honor Lieutenant Governor of Punjab was written to for this correction he advised the Deputy Commissioner sahab of Gurdaspur for correcting it. We are at a loss how this error was committed again.

This error should be corrected immediately. Hence, His Holiness Mirza Ghulam Ahmed sahab Promised Messiah AS has taken notice and informed His Honor Lieutenant Governor of Punjab of this error. We present said letter in it’s present condition as below and expect that the government of His Honor Sir Charles Rivaz shall correct this mistake soon to make the approximately 200,000 members of Ahmadiyya sect grateful about whose leader this error was committed. This is the letter:

  1. Part 1, Chapter 3, page 143, sentence 39 of the census report of Punjab states about me that my first task as a Molvi was preaching to the Chuhra community.

  2. This statement is entirely contrary to reality and baseless. And this damages my respect and reputation immensely.

  3. The person who claimed to preach to the Chuhra community was a totally different person named Imam ud Deen. His principles are totally different from Islam. Me and all true Muslims look at those principles with hatred. This person has been my harshest opponent for thirty years. It is totally unjust to associate my teachings with this person that I am sick of**.**

  4. Chuhras are considered a criminal community in this country. Creating my relation with such a community, which is entirely baseless, is to associate an insult to me. Chuhras are considered a humiliated community. The type of statement included in the census report damages my reputation immensely. It hurts the sentiments of thousands of loyal and respected subjects of the government who consider me their spiritual guide and religious leader.

  5. My principles and teachings from the beginning have contained such sophisticated manners and attainment of such high spiritual stations that, leave Chuhras, even those Muslims can not and have not accepted them who are in a humiliated state and their mannerisms are lowly. Rather such intelligent and honorable humans accept them who have spent extremely pure/clean lives. My followers include a lot of noble feudals, respected government officers, businessmen, religious scholars and highly educated Muslims.

  6. Same type of a statement about me was presented in Gurdaspur Gazzeteer. But when the government was informed about this mistake then the government’s home department through letter number 93 dated 16 March 1901 (right when the census had ended) answered that this sentence shall be excluded on revision and has directed Deputy Commissioner of Gurdaspur for it.

  7. This statement has now been included in a book that is considered authentic in the world. My respect and reputation will be damaged if this is not denied immediately.

  8. The same statement has been published in the Civil Military Gazette Lahore on the basis of the census report. If it is not denied, it will damage me by getting published in all other newspapers like this. In this way my relation with a humiliated community shall be displayed to the world erroneously.

  9. I am from a family of nobles that the government has respected forever for their loyalty and valuable services. This false statement against me spoils the reputation and respect of the entire family.

Malfuzat, V-5, pp.48-49.

What is Chuhra Mela?
It was an annual gathering in Qadian, organized by Mirza Imam-ud-Din and composed of the sweeper (chuhra) community from Qadian and adjoining areas, and also claimed to be the re-incarnation of a Hindu-Muslim saint, Lal Beg.  This could be a possible inspiration for Mirza Ghulam Ahmad‘s Jalsa Salana and for his movement as a whole, as Mirza Imam-ud-Din was a first cousin and rival of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad.

Other parties also confused the two religious movements in Qadian. A reference to this confusion can be found in Malfoozat (Speeches) Vol.5, pp.48-49.
