Intro
The Khilafat of Maulvi Nur ud Din (1908 to 1914) was a total disaster. Just 5 months into him becoming the Khalifa-1, there was a huge issue in terms of the powers of the Khalifa vs. the Sadr Anjuman, this led to the split in Ahmadiyya in 1914. The power struggle between the Khalifa-1 and the Sadr Anjuman reached its peak at the 1908 Jalsa Salana at Qadian, as Maulvi Muhammad Ali, Khwaja Kamal uddin and others gave speeches on how the Sadr Anjuman was in control, not the Khalifa.
A few days later, in Jan. of 1909, Maulvi Nur ud Din scheduled an emergency meeting of the top 200 members of Ahmadiyya in the world, which would be held at the Masjid Mubarak (on the roof) on Jan-31, 1909, in the meantime, a list of 7 questions was sent to prominent Ahmadi’s in Lahore, Qadian and other places and their opinions were sought. This list was allegedly created by Mir Muhammad Ishaq (MGA’s brother-in-law, 18 years old). Maulvi Muhammad Ali answered it also and sent his answer to Maulvi Nur ud Din, it seems that Maulvi Muhammad Ali didn’t want to oppose the Khilafat of Maulvi Nur ud Din, since he was also the President of the Sadr Anjuman and wanted Ahmadi’s to simply remain quiet until the Khalifa-1 died. The meeting ended and the trouble continued. Maulvi Muhammad Ali moved out of the house of MGA in this era too (See Mujahid-e-Kabir). The 1909 Jalsa Salana was held in April of 1909, not much is known about this Jalsa. May-1909 came and the first year of Khilafat for Maulvi Nur ud Din ended. 2 books of MGA were published posthumously in this era, “Jesus in India” and “Barahin-i-Ahmadiyya V-5″. In this era, Maulvi Nur ud Din famously said that MGA was a Nabi-ullah (march). In May of 1909, Maulvi Nur ud Din began collecting funds for the building of the famous “Talim ul Islam College” at Qadian, eventually, the British Government would cover the cost.
The 2nd year of his Khilafat runs from June-1909 to June-1910, there were no Jalsa’s held at Qadian and 1 book of MGA was published posthumously, “Nuzul ul Maseeh” (25th of August 1909). In Oct-1909, Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad (before his Khilafat) visited Jammu and Kashmir (see the ROR of October 1909), he went to the tomb of Yuz Asaf, he traveled with Mirza Bashir Ahmad, Maulvi Sarwar Shah and Mir Muhammad Ishaq. In 1910, Maulvi Nur ud Din called the Ahmadiyya Movement as the only jamaat that should be considered “Ahl-e-Sunnah Wa Jamaah” and thus was doing Takfir. In 1910, in the Urdu Review of Religions, they called Mirza Ghulam Ahmad a true prophet (Sucha Nabi). An Arabic only book of MGA was published posthumously in Feb-1910, “Lujjat un Nur”.
The 3rd year of the Khilafat of Maulvi Nur ud Din started in June of 1910. On October 9, 1910, a delegation of Ahmadi scholars went on a tour of Uttar Pradesh and this delegation was headed by Maulavi Syed Sarwar Shah and included people like Mufti Muhammad Sadiq, Khawaja Kamal-ud-Din, and Maulavi Sadruddin. When the delegation arrived in Lucknow, it had a meeting with Maulana Shibli No‘amaani, who made a special reference to Maulana Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen, who, at that time, was the head of Ahmadiyya Jama‘at. Maulana Shibli No‘amaani said, “Maulavi Hakeem Noor-ud-Deen is a giant among scholars and I have a keen desire to meet him and, as a matter of fact, I had decided to leave for Qadian but the visit was put off due to an accident.” (AlBadr, October 27, 1910). According to Tareekh ahmadiyyat vol 3 page 329, Maulvi Nur ud Din fell from his horse on 18 November 1910 (see Mujahid e Kabir), that is the time when all the deterioration and infections started, if you read on TA vol 3, you will read that he spent next 3+ years in misery. The 1910 Jalsa Salana at Qadian was held and Maulvi Nur ud Din was not in attendance, his leg was amputated in this era and he was seriously indisposed. As 1911 came around, many Ahmadi’s began to claim to be the true Khalifa of Ahmadiyya (See the case of Maulvi Abdullah Timapuri and Zahir ud Din’s book, “Nabi Ullah Ka Zuhur”) and were indisposing Maulvi Nur ud Din as the Khalifa, since he was bed-ridden, his leg was amputated and he couldn’t lead prayers or give speeches. At the same time, Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad (before his Khilafat) wrote “A Muslim is only he who accepts all those appointed by God”(April-1911). In this essay, Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad clearly called all deniers of MGA as Kafirs.
The 4th year of Maulvi Nur ud Din’s khilafat started in June of 1911. In July of 1911, an essay in ROR was published which asserted that MGA was a prophet. In Aug-1911, Khwaja Kamal ud Din responded to Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad (before his Khilafat) and his assertions of Takfir vs. Muslims. On 6 April 1912: Allama Shibli Nomani, a prominent Muslim leader organised a three-day jalsa in Lucknow, commencing on this day, to find the solution to the Shuddhi Movement. On his invitation, Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmud Ahmad and Khwaja Kamaluddin attended this event as well. The Jalsa Salana of 1911 was not held.
The 5th year of Maulvi Nur ud Din’s khilafat started in June of 1912. In June of 1912, Maulvi Nur ud Din was in Lahore and praised the work of Khwaja Kamal ud Din and other Ahmadi’s in Lahore. He was there in July of 1912 also. In August of 1912, Khawaja Kamal ud Din traveled to London and started the Ahmadiyya mission at the Woking mosque. “Mirqatul-Yaqeen” a biography on the life of Noorudin, published in 1912. In Sep-1912, Mufti Muhammad Sadiq wrote an essay wherein he confessed that he wrote the profession of MGA as “prophethood” in 1905. In the Fall of 1912 (Oct-Nov), Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad went for Hajj with his grandfather (Mir Nasir Nawab). The 1912 Jalsa Salana at Qadian was held, the Khalifa didn’t given any speeches. Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad seems to have returned to Qadian in the early months of 1913. Mirza Mahmud Ahmad’s Speech in January 1913 Saying Only Those Are Kafir Who Brand Ahmadis As Kafir. In April of 1913, an essay appears in the ROR, “Ahmad as a Prophet”.
The 6th year (10 months) of Maulvi Nur ud Din’s khilafat started in June of 1913. In July of 1913, Mirza Basheer ud Din Mahmud Ahmad (before his Khilafat) wrote an essay about the powers of the Khalifa. In Aug. of 1913, the Ahmadi Khalifa (Noorudin) supported the British government when they shot 20-30 Muslims who were rioting (1913). In December, the Jalsa Salana at Qadian of 1913 was held, the Khalifa didn’t give any speeches. In early Jan-1914, Maulvi Nur ud Din was forced to move out of the house of MGA. On March-13-1914, he died.
